USE CODE "tinnon30" FOR 30% OFF THE FIRST PURCHASE OF ANY SUBSCRIPTION

When I watch basketball, there are always little nuances that stand out or come to mind. I am blessed to see the good and the bad in a possession and how they can be fixed with a little creativity. The same could be said about players. No young lady who plays basketball is a complete or perfect player. Each of them brings their own set of skills to the table, which helps make their team better. Some may be more dominant than others, but at the same time, everyone has a set of “superpowers” that, once they are tapped in, bring out the good.

Just thinking about the game itself, there are so many qualities that can make a program reach the mountaintop. You can have a mix bag of everything: shooters, creative dribblers who can go there, bigs who can dominate, and so forth. Two things that ring true are that every successful team needs kids who can defend and rebound. Forget all the hoopla about 3-point shooters and whatever offensive scheme; if you don't have players who can't do those two things, you are in a world of trouble. Don't get me wrong, nowadays we love to see a good scoring game. But what if a defender steps out and shuts down that opposition? Think about that performance.

I just wanted you to think a little bit about what defenders you might have seen lately who are tough. Call them what you will, lockdown defenders, defensive specialists, whatever. A girl who can step up and take away the other team's best player, think of the value she brings to the table.

Here are just a few girls who contribute highly on the defensive end. These girls may not be the best in the state at what they do, but they are just a few girls who have piqued my interest as of late.

I have said it before, this young lady's stock is going to rise. A few years ago, I loved how she made all the hustle plays: i.e., taking charges, 50/50 balls, diving for balls on the floor. It was something about the way she moved and how she wasn't going to back down to anyone on the floor. This past postseason tournament, she went through a gauntlet of teams to help her club win the state title. It was how she battled numerous highly touted players and reduced their ability to impact the game. She plays with a motor, has a tremendous work ethic, and just really competes without little flare.

Her offensive game has evolved, but what's been impressive is her ability to utilize her speed and quickness to help out on the defensive side of the ball. She has gotten plenty of steals, created turnovers, really has hung her hat and prided herself on getting after it on that side of the ball. Her offensive numbers have gone up due to her style of play. She's becoming a battery ram on the defensive end and one who isn't afraid to cause havoc the full length of the floor.

She's been in talks early on as a Miss TN candidate. What I love about her game is that she is just going to go out there and compete, and she doesn't care who is in front of her. She's a lockdown defender who can time her strikes to get steals and deflections. Quick hips, great lateral footwork, she is going to stick her nose in there and poach the ball away. Still growing, she is one to watch as she becomes a name to watch amongst college recruiters

A solid guard who isn't afraid to mix it up on the defensive end. Versatile. She is a glue girl, the ultimate utility player. Her squad relied on her early on to create pressure on the other team and force them into turnovers. Countless times, it was her ability to make the other team panic, causing them to turn the ball over by throwing an errant pass, or to get a steal or a deflection that led to an easy bucket. She is the one who loves to get up into someone and make them use all their counter moves as they try to get into an offense. She's one to keep an eye on as her club looks to her to become a force to be reckoned with.

A stingy guard who can cause turnovers. She is speedy, plays with a ball of energy, and her ability to force the opposition into unfavorable areas on the floor allows her teammates to capitalize on their opponent's mistakes. She has quick hands and feet, knows when to strike, and she has fast-twitching hips that enable her to stay in front of her opponent. She causes havoc anytime she is on the floor, especially when she is in the backcourt pressing. A talented kid who is one who uplifts her ballclub.
