Every first game mattered, regardless of the outcome. With more than 150 teams spread across four venues, there was no shortage of talent on display throughout the day. Whether a team won or lost, there were still opportunities for players to make an impact as bracket play continued. As expected, some players found ways to separate themselves from the pack. Below are five players who truly stood out to me on Day One of the 16U division in Batavia.

Maeve is one of those players who can give you 100% energy from start to finish on both sides of the ball, and that's exactly what she did in the games I watched. As a guard, she is aggressive on the drive and shows signs of being a solid point guard as her vision continues to grow. That was on display throughout the day, whether it was a pinpoint behind the back pass that resulted in an easy assist or going after a loose ball for a second possession, getting it to the open person, then coming back to the play and knocking down the three. Those are the types of plays that don't always show up in the box score but can shift momentum. She had no let-up on defense and definitely caused issues for her matchups that were trying to get their offense going. Big fan of what her potential can be.

What Essence brings to the floor is relentlessness, high energy, and a motor that doesn't have an off button. Defensively is where she really stood out to me. She has the length to guard 2-4 and the grit to battle with bigger players around the rim. On the offensive side of the floor, the skill set is still growing, but she found ways to make an impact with simple hook shots, putbacks, and second chance opportunities. Her value comes from how disruptive she can be over the course of a game and throughout the possession.

Victoria is one of those players that you need to continue to watch over time because this kid has something special. The pace and feel for the game are there, and when you mix that in with high level athleticism and aggression, you're getting a player who is not afraid of the moment or the challenge. She can score with some of the best players on the court, and she showed that in both games today. She is smooth, crafty, and effective, whether it's scoring the basketball or creating opportunities for others. The skill set, confidence, and overall feel for the game continue to stand out.

In the first game I got to watch of Poleski, what kept me watching was her ability to handle the ball, along with active hands and strong defense. She plays longer than her listed height suggests and consistently makes an impact on both ends. Offensively, she can score off the dribble or off the catch, and she showed the ability to do it while being guarded tight and through tough contact. From the outside, her jumper is smooth, textbook, and confident whenever she lets it go. The instincts and awareness stand out as a playmaker as well. She doesn't second guess her decisions, and more often than not, she's making the right read. A major stock riser in her class.

In both wins that I watched of Bennett, the level of focus and awareness remained consistent as the floor general for her team. Offensively, the skill set is simple, but the decision making stands out. Whether it was getting to the rim, creating for a teammate, or simply slowing things down and reading the floor, she consistently made the right play. The passing vision was evident on both cut passes in the half court and advance passes in transition. There was confidence behind the arc as well. Strong potential.
