Recap from the 46th District Tournament

There is nothing like cutting down the nets on championship night. Heated rivalries, packed gyms, and pride on the line. This is Kentucky basketball at its absolute best, and the 46th District Tournament delivered all of it. High intensity from start to finish, big-time moments, and players stepping up when it mattered most. Every team battled, but only one could finish the job.   The tournament, hosted by West Jessamine, opened with the host school setting the tone early. The Lady Colts came out focused and ready, knocking off Burgin 54-24. Their defensive pressure and ability to control the tempo proved to be the difference as they dictated the pace from start to finish and never allowed Burgin to get comfortable offensively.   On the other side of the bracket, Mercer County defeated East Jessamine 61-58 in thrilling fashion. The Lady Titans battled on both ends of the floor and answered every run with toughness and composure. It was a hard-fought game that showed early this group was determined to make a championship push.   That set the stage for the anticipated title game, and West Jessamine once again proved why they have been one of the top teams in the region. The Lady Colts captured the championship with a convincing 64-30 victory to secure their second straight district title. Their balance, experience, rebounding, and defensive intensity were simply too much to handle as they capped off another dominant district run.   Here are some of the key players who made it happen.   Junior [player_tooltip player_id='557203' first='Claire' last='Marshall'] led the way with a monster double-double, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds while controlling the paint on both ends all night long. Claire returned this season and continued to establish herself as one of the top post players in the area, averaging 13.1 ppg while shooting 46% from the field and pulling down a team-high 10.6 rebounds per contest. Her physicality, effort on the glass, and ability to finish through contact were huge throughout the tournament.    Senior Isabella Lewis scored 14 points, including going 7-8 from the free throw line, while adding 4 rebounds. Isabella consistently knocked down timely shots and brought veteran leadership to the backcourt. She averaged 10.7 ppg, 2.3 rebounds, and connected on 47 three-pointers this season, showing her ability to stretch the floor and make defenses pay from the perimeter.     Senior Katie Mastin added 12 points and knocked down both of her three-point attempts in the championship game. Katie once again proved to be a reliable scoring option and floor spacer, averaging 11 ppg while hitting 54 three-pointers at over 35%. She also shot an impressive 81.4% from the free throw line and contributed 2.8 rebounds per game. Her confidence and shot-making ability were on full display during the district run.     Senior Kimberly Johnson contributed 4 points and 5 rebounds while doing a lot of the little things that help winning teams succeed. Kimberly averaged 7.3 ppg while shooting over 46% from the field and finished as the team's second-leading rebounder at 6.3 per game. Her toughness inside and ability to defend multiple spots brought valuable balance to the Lady Colts lineup.      Mercer County also had some notable performances in their semifinal victory.    8th grader Karis Wilham had an impressive showing, scoring 13 points, knocking down 3 three-pointers, and grabbing 7 rebounds. The young standout played with confidence beyond her years and showed the ability to impact the game both inside and out. Karis averaged 4.4 ppg and 3.3 rebounds this season, and her performance in the district tournament was a glimpse into a very bright future.      Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1038932' first='Izzie' last='Carlton'] finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for another strong double-double performance. Izzie was a force throughout the season and continued that level of play in district action, averaging a team-high 18.5 ppg along with 12.8 rebounds per game. Her motor, physical presence, and ability to score around the basket consistently made her one of the toughest matchups in the district.    Sophomore Maddi Baker contributed 2 points while tying for a team-high 11 rebounds. Maddi embraced her role and battled hard on the glass all game long, helping Mercer County stay competitive in a physical matchup. She averaged 4.2 ppg and was second on the team in rebounding at 7 per game, continuing to establish herself as an important piece for the future.
