Young Stars Shine at Prep Girls Hoops’ The Takeover

The Prep Girls Hoops Marquee Event, The Takeover, was an absolute blast. I count myself fortunate to get an early look at the next wave of talented girls basketball players from Virginia, DC, and Maryland. Some already possess games beyond their years, while others are overflowing with raw potential and long-term upside. From skilled guards to relentless competitors, the future of basketball in the DMV is in very good hands. Here is another group of young lady hoopers who stood out at this marquee event.    With a silky-smooth game around the basket and a developing handle. Cunningham possesses the polish of a player far beyond her years. She finishes well through contact, and defends the post effectively. Already shows a game that looks ready for the high school level. What may be even more impressive is how well she runs the floor at her size. A skill that gives her intriguing upside as she continues to develop.     Hawkins showcased her scoring prowess throughout the event. A true three-level scorer and tough rebounder, she proved effective both on the block and facing up from the perimeter. Using strong footwork and smart positioning, Hawkins consistently found ways to be productive around the basket. The Class of 2030 wing possesses impressive upside as she prepares to enter the high school ranks.     A prototypical point guard, Smith impacts the game even when she is not scoring. Still, her baskets always seem to come at key moments. Utilizing crisp passing, above-average court vision, and an impressive basketball IQ, Smith consistently makes winning plays. Whether it's delivering a difficult pass through traffic or coming up with a key defensive stop at the top of the key. She can be trusted to make the right play when it matters most.     Cuffee plays big in the post with a traditional back-to-the-basket game. Utilizing feel, footwork, and soft hands to be effective around the rim. A relentless rebounder, her work on the glass consistently creates second-chance opportunities and can quickly ignite transition the other way. Defensively, her length allows her to alter and redirect shots around the basket, making her an essential presence in the paint on both ends of the floor.     Already strong enough to command double teams, Cook has the ability to control the boards and create major problems defensively. Comfortable playing through contact and athletic enough to run the floor effectively. She brings a physical presence that immediately stands out. As she continues to get stronger and more polished with age, Cook has the potential to become a matchup problem that consistently demands attention in the paint.    The future of girls basketball in the DMV is in very capable hands. Events like The Takeover are reminders that the next generation is already developing the skill, toughness, IQ, and competitive edge needed to carry the game forward, and I consider myself fortunate to have been witness to it.
