A basketball team is only as good as its point guard. The position demands leadership, poise, and control. Above all, the point guard is responsible for running the offense. Every possession begins with their decision-making. As a result, coaches often trust experienced upperclassmen with the role. They have earned that responsibility over time. However, Virginia features several underclass guards ready for the challenge. In fact, some are already capable of leading an offense. Others are well on their way. These some of the underclass point guards who caught my attention.

Fowler appears unassuming, but looks can be deceiving. She plays with toughness and confidence. Defensively, she is a relentless on-ball defender. She thrives in full-court pressure or the half court. Her footwork and positioning remain fundamentally sound. As a result, she consistently makes opposing guards uncomfortable.

Offensively, Fowler impacts the game in multiple ways. She scores at the rim, from distance, and as a passer. Rather than forcing plays, she trusts her reads and timing. She is equally comfortable creating points or assists. Likewise, she pushes the break with confidence. In the half court, she stays poised and under control. As she develops, Fowler is a guard worth following.

Norman understands the point guard position. She knows when to involve teammates and when to score herself. That balance separates her from many young guards. Additionally, she plays with confidence and poise.

Norman is surprisingly strong. She attacks through contact and finishes with either hand. Defensively, her strength makes ball handlers uncomfortable. She applies constant pressure and forces turnovers. Once the ball changes hands, her speed fuels the transition game. As a result, she quickly turns defense into offense.

Waddel-Moser brings a blue-collar approach every possession. She plays with energy, toughness, and relentless effort. Whether directing the offense or taking over, she stays composed. Most importantly, she competes to win.

She embraces the dirty work without hesitation. Rebounding, taking charges, and making hustle plays define her game. Offensively, she operates with precision and efficiency. She attacks the rim or facilitates within the half court. Her fundamentals remain consistently sound. As she matures, Waddel-Moser has the tools to become a true floor general.

Kenon plays an 84-foot game. Defensively, she pressures ball handlers from baseline to baseline. She uses strength and leverage to disrupt the offense. As a result, every dribble becomes difficult. In the half court, she stays disciplined and rarely misses an assignment.

Offensively, Kenon sees the floor exceptionally well. She delivers accurate post entries and timely passes. Additionally, she makes smart reads with the ball. When needed, she stretches the defense from deep. She also attacks the rim with confidence. Consequently, her drives create opportunities for herself and her teammates.
