Please Allow Them to Introduce Themselves

I love summer basketball and the excitement it brings. Whether it's a high school summer league game or a tournament in the middle of July, there's never a shortage of surprises.   While it's always enjoyable to check on the progress of previously evaluated prospects or see how the area's Division I-caliber players fare on the summer circuit, one of the greatest joys of scouting is discovering new talent. Sometimes it's a player who was only a small adjustment away from breaking through. Other times it's someone you've never seen before who immediately demands your attention.   The best part of scouting is that every gym holds the possibility of finding a player ready to announce themselves. These are the athletes who introduced themselves to me this summer—not with words, but through their play—and earned a place among my biggest summer discoveries.    Tillery is an old-school, fundamentally sound point guard who values possessions and keeps her team organized. She is disciplined enough to get the ball back to the middle of the floor and initiate the offense, yet capable of scoring when the situation demands it.   Moreover, Tillery operates with precision beyond her years. She consistently feeds the post, swings the ball to the open side, and distributes effectively in both transition and the half court. As a result, she can be trusted to make the right decision at the right time, serving as an extension of her coach on the floor.   Defensively, Tillery is equally dependable. She rarely gambles for steals or finds herself out of position. Instead, her anticipation allows her to step in front of errant passes and disrupt offenses. Those instincts are difficult to teach and often separate true floor generals from the rest.   As she enters the middle school ranks, Tillery's development will be worth following closely.     I first evaluated Gordon-Thompson last year and believed she was one shot away from becoming a legitimate prospect. Since then, she has found that shot and developed into a far more efficient perimeter scorer.   Moreover, Gordon-Thompson gets her jumper off much quicker than before. That improvement reflects countless hours of work and a clear commitment to her development.   Playing primarily as an off guard, she consistently stretches defenses and makes opponents respect her range. Consequently, driving lanes and passing opportunities open for her teammates.   Defensively, Gordon-Thompson has also taken a significant step forward. She stays fundamentally sound, moves her feet well, and forces ball handlers to earn every possession.   With two more high school seasons remaining, her ceiling continues to rise. Another productive offseason could put a future Signing Day well within reach. Maslaney embodies that trait on every possession. She plays with a relentless motor and never seems to have an off switch defensively. Moreover, she pressures ball handlers the length of the floor without taking plays off. Her toughness is impossible to ignore. She dives for loose balls, battles for rebounds, and competes for every 50-50 ball.    However, her game extends well beyond effort. Maslaney is a high-IQ guard who reads the floor and makes sound decisions. She distributes effectively in the half court and understands how to keep the offense moving. Additionally, she welcomes contact when attacking the basket or chasing offensive rebounds.   Her perimeter shot remains a work in progress. Nevertheless, her work ethic suggests that improvement is only a matter of time. With continued development, Maslaney has the tools to become an immediate varsity contributor. More importantly, she projects as a dependable player coaches can trust for four years.     Eva McClintock | 2032 | [program_tooltip program_id='1230024' first='Lady' last='Angels']   At 5-foot-10, McClintock already possesses the size that immediately captures a coach's attention. Her length and athleticism create difficult matchup problems for opponents.   Around the basket, she displays soft hands and impressive touch. Consequently, she consistently finishes when teammates deliver the ball inside. However, her ability to run the floor separates her from many young post players. She moves with uncommon grace and athleticism in transition.   Moreover, McClintock can push the break herself or sprint the wing for an easy finish. Those skills make her a versatile offensive threat.Her natural gifts are evident, but so is her polish.   She already plays with poise beyond her years.With continued development, McClintock has the tools to become a special prospect. As a rising seventh grader, she firmly established herself on my watchlist this summer.    Every summer introduces a few new names to remember, and based on what I saw, don't be surprised if each of these players continues climbing the recruiting radar in the years to come.
