With the AAU season wrapped up and attention beginning to shift toward the upcoming high school season, the offseason becomes an important window for players to take the next step. From developing their game and competing against stronger talent to building recruiting connections and getting their film in front of college coaches, what players do during this time can make a major difference. We take a look at five things players should be doing to elevate their game and recruiting—and some Utah players who are already putting those pieces into action.

1) Create a recruiting presence.

Don't wait for coaches to discover you. Keep your film current, post quality game clips, maintain an updated player profile, and reach out directly to programs that fit your level. Include your graduation year, position, height, school/club team, GPA, schedule, and contact information. Coaches should be able to quickly figure out who you are, how you play, and where they can see you next.

Start to contact coaches via email. Tell them specifically why you're interested in their school. Be deliberate about the programs you contact, follow up, and BE PERSISTENT. Don't sit back and wait for recruiting to happen.

Prep Girls Hoops has partnered with NCSA to help connect athletes with college coaches and programs that fit what they're looking for. Other recruiting platforms, including FieldLevel and SportsRecruits, can also help players get their information in front of coaches. Post your film, send emails, reach out to programs you're interested in, and be proactive about building those connections. Don't overlook NAIA or JUCO programs either. The recruiting landscape has changed, and those levels can provide a great path to two years of development and meaningful minutes on the floor rather than spending your first couple of college seasons primarily on the practice squad.

Zoe is a great example of how maintaining a strong, current recruiting presence can create opportunities. By regularly updating her recruiting profiles, academic information, and game film, Zoe gives college coaches an accurate view of her as a student-athlete. That visibility has led coaches from NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, and NWAC programs to contact her. This has resulted in offers from Black Hills State University, Bethel College, University of New York at Plattsburgh, Hood College, Northwest College, Western Wyoming College, Highland College, Peninsula College, and Portland College. Her experience shows the value of keeping your information complete, your film current, and your progress visible to college coaches.

Amaiya has taken advantage of showcase events to get her game in front of more college coaches, and that exposure has helped her recruiting gain some real traction. Her play has already resulted in recent offers from Weber State, Utah Tech, and Eastern Washington. By getting into the right gyms and performing when coaches are watching, Amaiya is showing how valuable showcase opportunities can be when players are intentional about where they compete and how they use that exposure.

Rihanna has also been staying busy on the recruiting side, putting in the work to get her name and game in front of college programs. That effort has started to gain traction, with offers from Rust College, Hood College, and Penn State Beaver already on the table. By continuing to build her recruiting portfolio, update her information, and connect with coaches, Rihanna is creating opportunities for herself and showing why being proactive can make a difference in the recruiting process.
