This is a group of SELFLESS producers.

As a Point Guard you have to love handing out Assists as much as you love scoring the rock. If you are someone that gets fulfillment from it, you could be a great PG that makes everyone else on the court the best version of themselves and that is what it's all about.

Below we discuss five returning prospects that registered some of the best Assist numbers throughout the state last season.

Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!

One of the best passers out of the 2027 Class returning this Winter will be KeaOnna Worley of CR - Prairie. Worley, the UNI WBB commit, has always had an act for assisting others. She is great with her foresight to see what's coming before it actually happens and she knows all sorts of ways to get the ball to her teammates in those moments. She is your ideal Guard in a pick-and-roll situation because if the defense goes under, she can step back to shoot it. If they trail over the screen, she can hit the rolling player once they seal off of it. This type of action adds up to a lot of Assists for Worley in general. It's going to be fun to watch this one at the next level. She plays with smoothness that not many others possess when the ball is in their possession so I can't wait to see how that translates once she gets onto the collegiate court but I'm sure right now she is just focused at the season at hand.

Hayden Kuhlmann led the entire state last Winter dishing out 173 Assists in 23 contests. That puts her right at 7.5 PER GAME. That is an eye opening number when you think about it. She did this while scoring 13.5 PPG, shooting the ball at a 38% clip. Not to mention, she only averaged 2.8 TPG, giving her an impressive Assist-To-Turnover ratio. This Spirit Lake team brings back most who helped them make big plays last season so I'm hoping we see some more impressive numbers out of Kuhlmann from the PG spot. She will have to do everything, "a little bit more", this time around but that is solely because they lose production due to graduating a few individuals moving into this season. That shouldn't impact the Assist numbers too badly though. They are going to have to find some attempts from other players who haven't shot as often in the past and that's okay. Others will step up and if they seize the moment, they could be the next big producer for Spirit Lake for seasons to come.

Newman Catholic posted a respectable record last season, winning a majority of their contests before getting to the Post season. Someone for this group, that should be a mine producers once again this season at the PG position is Tess Weiner. Weiner is a better than average scoring threat on offense, she knows how to defend like her life depends on it every night, she gets joy out of assisting others as much as she does as scoring the ball herself at times, and she makes everyone else around her better overall because of her play. There is a lot to like out of Weiner and how she plays the game. She plays it the right way and that could take her places in the future. Last season as a Junior she had 139 Assists in 23 games, ranking her #10 in Iowa in total Assists. An accomplishment she should be proud of but not satisfied with moving into this Winter.

There are a lot of possibilities for Sophie Bird and GVC High School moving into this season. This team returns most of their core from years past and they add a Post player standing at 6'2ish. Bird ranked in the Top 25 last season in total Assists (132) and that was without having a big to throw at in the lane on every possession. This season, she will have that luxury so not only will her Assists numbers go up, so will most of her other positive statical numbers within the game. Team's attention will go to stopping what's inside the paint and everyone else is going to be able to FEAST off of that if they play their hands correctly.

You have to give credit where credit is due and Jaylee Shaffer deserves some credit for her Mount Ayr team's success over the last couple of years. Shaffer is their PG, that makes plays for those around her. She has consistently led her team the last few seasons in APG and I expect she will do the same thing this season as a Senior as well. They have 2-3 other main producers along side Shaffer but all of their action begins with the PG. She is who gets them into their action and she makes sure everyone is in the right position so that things will play out how they imagine.
