8 DMV Freshmen You Can't Miss

The DMV Freshman Showcase brought plenty of talent to Baltimore, and there were several players I wanted to take a closer look at following the event. After diving into additional film, these 8 freshmen showed intriguing pieces to their games that made them worth highlighting.    Silver plays with a strong feel for the game, surveying the floor when she receives the ball and quickly reading and reacting to the defense. She makes herself available on the wing and seems to anticipate her next move before the catch, allowing her to locate gaps, get downhill, and search for the best scoring option around the basket. She can knock down the three as well.     Heavayah is versatile on offense, reading the defense from the perimeter, maintaining her dribble, and making smart decisions about when to attack. She can also play inside, using her body to shield the defender before finishing with a reverse layup, as well as showing she can shoot outside. She can secure a rebound, create space for herself, and transition directly into an attack toward the basket.     Tucker is strong inside, posting up big, sealing her defender, and using good footwork to create opportunities at the rim. She has patience and awareness from the short corner, using a pump fake and attacking toward the block before pivoting out of pressure and finding an open cutter when her lane was taken away. She can also put the ball on the floor and back down defenders on her way to the basket.     Russell has impressive handles, controlling the pace of her dribble as she reads the floor and determines when it's time to attack. She uses her pivot to push the defense back before navigating through traffic to finish against taller opponents. She can also turn things up in transition, flying by her defender and finding gaps to attack and score.     Soto understands how to execute a motion offense, making fundamental cuts, opening to the ball, and finding space for a layup. She scores well around the basket for a guard, whether sneaking her way to the block for a two-foot finish or driving against pressure and staying focused on completing the play. Her skills and IQ give her multiple ways to find scoring opportunities inside.     Alegi knows her role as a shooter and works to put herself in position to shoot when she gets the ball. She relocates into space with her hands ready, particularly in the corner, where she can knock down multiple threes. The corner may be her sweet spot, but she can also score from the wing, showing her shooting extends around the perimeter.     Bocian brings great energy and vocal leadership to the floor, communicating with her teammates, facilitating, and helping keep them organized. She handles pressure well, using retreat-backs and her dribble to create separation before finding open looks. She also has a nice shooting stroke and can make strong takes to the basket regardless of bigger competition.     Murphy's neon orange shoes may grab your attention first, but the energy and personality in her game quickly give you another reason to watch. She is shifty with the ball, splitting defenders to reach the rim and penetrating the middle in transition to draw the defense before kicking out to an open shooter. She can also attack through contact and knock down shots herself.
