Defense was a big part of the action during Week 1 of We Ball in the Fall at Northview High School. Throughout the afternoon, several players made an impact with their ability to pressure the ball, anticipate passes, create deflections, and turn steals into opportunities on the other end. Strong defense can change the momentum of a game quickly, and these five players consistently found ways to disrupt what the offense was trying to do.

Nala made her presence felt defensively with her ability to create turnovers and immediately turn them into offense. She came away with back-to-back steals during one stretch, taking the first one coast-to-coast for a finish. That wasn't the only time her defense created a scoring opportunity, as she later came up with another steal and converted it into a bucket. Nala consistently made things difficult for the offense and showed good instincts when opportunities to take the ball away presented themselves.

Cydney used her athleticism well on the defensive end, particularly when reading the passing lanes. She anticipated passes and put herself in position to create turnovers rather than simply reacting after the ball arrived. One of her best sequences came when she jumped a passing lane for a steal, immediately took the ball coast-to-coast, and finished through contact for an and-one. Cydney's ability to turn a defensive play into points at the other end showed how quickly she can impact a possession.

Saamiya was a pesky defender who consistently applied pressure and made ball handlers work. She showed active hands throughout the afternoon and did a good job jumping passing lanes to create additional opportunities. After coming away with one steal, Saamiya pushed the ball coast-to-coast and drew a foul on her shot. She also showed plenty offensively, using a shifty handle to get downhill, protecting the ball by keeping it wide away from the defender, and mixing in a floater. Her defensive activity combined with her ability to handle the ball made her effective on both ends.

Alayna consistently found ways to get involved defensively. She showed good hands, came away with multiple steals, and quickly looked to turn those plays into transition opportunities. After one steal, she immediately delivered a quality pass ahead in transition rather than holding onto the ball. Alayna also battled for a tough defensive rebound among taller players, showing a willingness to compete on the glass. On the offensive end, she ran the floor for a transition bucket and showed her range by knocking down threes from both the corner and the wing.

Jakiyah brought athleticism and speed to the defensive end and used both to make things difficult for the players she was guarding. She showed good hands defensively and consistently competed on that end of the floor. Jakiyah also helped finish possessions by rebounding well, giving her team opportunities to get out and play in transition. Offensively, she used her speed to get downhill and put pressure on the defense. Her ability to defend, rebound, and quickly transition to offense gave her a solid impact throughout Week 1.
