Expert Analysis

Tatum DeVries enters June as one of the more skilled perimeter scorers in this ranking range. The Bloomington South shooting guard can stretch defenses with her outside shot while also creating offense off the dribble. Her confidence as a scorer stands out, and she plays with a good offensive rhythm that allows her to produce in multiple ways.
What makes DeVries especially important for Bloomington South is her ability to generate momentum offensively. She can knock down perimeter shots in bunches and help open the floor for teammates. June competition will give her another opportunity to showcase her scoring consistency against athletic defenders and continue developing as an all-around guard. If she continues improving defensively and as a playmaker, her stock could rise quickly throughout the summer months.

Tatum was one of the best shooters in the gym all weekend. Tatum has deep range and an incredibly quick release that makes her difficult to contest. She also showed strong basketball IQ as a playmaker, making smart reads and understanding spacing. Defensively, she competed at a high level both on and off the ball and brought nonstop energy every game.

Tatum has looked much more comfortable this Spring with DistinXion than she did last Summer. She has been known as a very good perimeter shooter, and the one thing she did all Spring was shoot it extremely well each time I saw her…and coaches noticed. She has nice length, fluid athleticism, and a good IQ for the game, but her knockdown shooting from outside will be the top reason schools recruit her, as great shooters are hard to find anymore. I do like that she also has a quiet toughness to her, she defends with length and energy, and she has communicated well this Spring.

I saw Tatum a couple of times over the first two days, and the biggest thing I noticed from last year is that she just looked much more comfortable and aggressive with this DistinXion team. She was hunting shots on each catch, she showed a quick release, and she appeared as though she was confident every shot was going in. She has improved her ability to handle contact off the bounce, but her best weapon is her perimeter shooting. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and she drew several compliments from elite small college onlookers who were impressed with her play.

Another set of Lady Panthers welcome Tatum to B-Town, as she follows her family to Hoosier land. South has really nice talent, size, and length throughout their roster, but her ability to bury open jumpers, and with range, should definitely be an asset to their slashers and front-liners. Tatum plays with a really nice basketball savvy, plus she’s much tougher than her long & wiry frame might suggest. Look for her to be a nice offensive addition.

Tatum seems to have really found her niche with this DistinXion (17U) program. She moves around in the offense like she’s been with the group for years, and when she’s able to get any rhythm at all, she’s burying 3-pointer after 3-pointer. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and she should only add to the weapons Bloomington South has returning to the fold in 2025-2026. I also like Tatum’s quiet toughness, her motor, and her willingness to be physical.

Tatum has been on the move the last couple of years, primarily because she is the daughter of new IU Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Darian DeVries. Tatum is just starting to experience Indiana basketball, but she has performed nicely in the brief chances I’ve had to see her. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and when she’s able to get set, she is an accurate perimeter shooter. I hope to see her more with DistinXion as the July “live” periods roll around.

DeVries finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. She shot 6-8 from the field, including 2-4 from three. Tatum has a beautiful outside shot. She is ready to shoot before the ball touches her hands. This one has terrific mechanics! She runs the floor exceptionally well. One of the best plays during the contest was when Tatum received the beautiful outlet pass from Kellogg! DeVries is a fundamentally sound athlete that continues to play at a high level!
