Continue ReadingAs relayed in Part 1, a year ago the then ten-team Mid-Continent League (MCL) yielded the class 3A state championship third place team, Norton, and the class 2A fourth place team, Trego. Neither team won the league. Thomas More Prep-Marian (TMP) earned that reward. This year’s version of the MCL is promising to be even more challenging due to nine of the fifteen all-league players returning, Hoxie entering the league bringing two all-Northwest Kansas League players with it, and strong talent entering the league as freshman or are already present but did not receive all-conference recognition a year ago.
Part 1 communicated information about the nine returning all-league players. This part 2 will shine light on impact freshmen and players to watch who did not make an all-league team a year ago.
NR Macy Schamberger, 5’9″, Hoxie, 2020 – Schamberger and teammate Addi Campbell have a shot at accomplishing something interesting, earning not just all-league back-to-back but accomplishing it as first team selections in two different leagues. She was a first team NWK League selection a year ago. Given that Schamberger is a quick, strong, three point shooter she has the ability to accomplish that feat.
#71 Addi Campbell, 5’4″, Hoxie, Wheat State Elite, 2020 – As with her teammate above, Campbell comes into the league following selection as a first team NWK League selection a year ago. With averages of 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 4.3 steals per game, Campbell is a force on both ends of the floor. She has shown the ability to knock down the mid-range and perimeter jumper as well as get to the rim quickly and finish with either hand. With solid off-ball anticipation to go with her quickness, she is a threat to jump passing lanes and take the ball the length of the floor in a hurry. She has shown good full court vision but decision making to finish the break needs improvement. At Reign the Plains (July 2019), she showed an ability to score in traffic and to knock down the three. Over three games she averaged 6 points (3/7 from three), 3.3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Given her skill set, Campbell also has a legitimate shot to earn first team selection as well.

Photo by Western Kansas Elite.NR Madison Walt, Trego, Western Kansas Elite 2022 – Walt is fundamentally sound and long. Her summer coaches noted that she shoots well and can play multiple positions. They also said she plays hard and is very coachable. There is plenty of upside with Walt, making her one to watch.
NR Megan Hamel, 5’4″, TMP-Marian, Ohlde Elite 2022 – With the team losing a pair of all-league players to graduation, Hamel will be a player to watch. Her summer coaches say she plays hard and is a tough-nosed competitor. She also shot well and played well in transition.
Phillipsburg and Ohlde Elite 2023 guard Taryn Sides.Taryn Sides, 5’6″, CG, Phillipsburg, Ohlde Elite 2023 – Sides has generated a great deal of attention over the summer. At Reign the Plains (July 2019) she hung 30 points on a strong Wheat State Elite (Chaos) team. While showing her scoring ability, especially when she got her feet set on the perimeter, her aggressiveness as an offensive rebounder created several extra possessions. World Exposure Report noted in August that “Sides plays with high basketball IQ and energy while showcasing a scoring ability on the perimeter, highlighted by her three-point shooting marksmanship. Sides is a big name coming out of July and is picking up interest from Power 5 programs.” Dan Olson adds that Sides is a “smart and poised guard play with great court vision.
#133 Tayli Hartwell, 5’3″, G, Norton, 2020 – Averaged 4.4 points, 2.5 assists, and 2.3 steals. She also had a good 2:1 assists to turnovers ration and shot 30% from three (14/47).
