Carrollwood Day is one of the best teams in 3A, no doubt about it. They have four seniors that are already committed to play at the next level (3 D1, 1 D2). Clearwater is essentially a JV squad right now as the only players who scored in this one were Freshmen and Sophomores. CDS took control in this one early and never relinquished it from there with the score by quarter being: 26-6, 48-12, 57-19, and 68-23 as the final. Veterans Have Their Way As mentioned above, the Patriots have four seniors who are committed to play college ball. Maliyah Perry is their PG and creator on offense who is committed to play Division 2 at Rollins College. She scored 10 points, and had numerous assists and steals on defense. I really liked her game on both ends, and how she carried herself as a point guard. Their other Senior guard is Tarriyona Gary, Towson commit, who put up 6 points in a lopsided victory. Carrollwood Day's size is what gave Clearwater problems with Tiasia McMillan, Colgate commit, scoring 12 in limited playing time. She is a 6-footer that rebounded the ball well, and was strong around the hoop after good off-ball movement created space for her. The tallest senior on the team is 6'2 Weeyah McGill, Texas A&M Corpus Christi commit, who contributed 8 points and sinking both of her free throws. She has a good leap which helped secure boards and made buckets that much easier by soaring over shorter defenders. Outside of the seniors, Jr. Ary Dizon and So. Milahnie Perry were the two who led the team in scoring on this night. Ary is another 6'2 post that impressed me the most against Clearwater. She is an excellent shooter for her height (knocked down a three), and is always looking to block a shot in the paint for a player that should be all over college's radars. Milahnie had 7 of her 13 points at the charity stripe with no one being able to stop her drives to the rack. She's a smart player that has a nice shot, and I think she's one of the best Sophomores in the area who will get plenty of college attention. This CDS team is stacked and ready to prove they are the best 3A team in the state after a 27-2 season fell just short. Clearwater Rolling Young The Tornadoes are without their vet leader in Sr. D'Mya Ferguson who is out with a stress fracture, but should be back December 3rd which is right before their matchup with a talented Southeast squad. For now, Clearwater is 2-1 behind a Freshman duo of Liv Fuller and Ace Sturdivant. These two have played together for a long time, and you can tell when you watch them ball in sync. I've got the chance to watch two of their early career lessons against two of the best teams in the state with Tampa Bay Tech (preseason) and Carrollwood Day. This team isn't afraid to play anyone, but they just aren't there yet with a lack of experience as opposed to some local powerhouses with more years under their belts. Liv (8 points) and Ace (6 points) were held in check by an incredible CDS team, but they will learn more from this one than some of their lopsided wins (just not as fun). Another Freshman who has caught my eye is 6-foot forward Jade Price. Between these three, I would not be surprised if Clearwater wins at least 15 games this year, especially once Ferg is back. Carrollwood Day (2-0) has Crystal River next on Dec. 2 with a couple tough matchups in Bishop Kenny and Fort Myers after that one. Clearwater (2-1) will play a district game against Southeast in it's next game on Dec. 4.
