Florida 2030 Watchlist: Prospects With the “It” Factor

Over the past five to six years of covering girls' basketball, I've come across players who make you recognize immediately that they are "special." It's something you can't coach or teach. They thrive under immense pressure and make plays that leave you scratching your head, wondering how they pulled it off. They carry themselves with confidence and combine the physical gifts with the instincts, poise, and a competitive drive that separate them from the crowd. They have the “it” factor.

[player_tooltip player_id='1188178' first='Callie' last='James']' confidence on the floor is unmatched, and she has the game to match her demeanor. A three-level scorer with the “it” factor, James competes comfortably against any competition and has an array of tools to counter whatever the defense throws at her. Take away the drive, and she can hurt you with her jumper. Play her tight, and she can blow by her defender to finish at the rim or knock down a floater. Her ability stands out, but it's her confidence and execution when the game matters most that make her special.

[player_tooltip player_id='1852678' first='Autumn' last='Forney'] is another player who possesses the “it” factor, and she's so calm that she might not even know it. Forney doesn't have to score to stand out. Her awareness and ability to impact the game draw your attention as soon as she steps on the floor. She always seems to be in the vicinity of the ball, anticipating the next pass and putting herself in position to make a play. Her instincts allow her to affect the game without forcing the action, and her calm demeanor makes it all look natural.

[player_tooltip player_id='1312287' first='Freda' last='Stamper'] stood out this past summer, and after several tournaments, that impression never changed. Stamper makes sound decisions on the floor and attacks the rim with purpose. She can knock down the three, read the defense, and take what it gives her. Her ability to recognize opportunities and act decisively is part of her “it” factor. She continued to impress at a recent Reps on Reps showcase playing against her peers, where she was dominant, and the "it" factor was on full display.

[player_tooltip player_id='1327031' first='Zoe' last='Bone'] took a moment between games to talk to Prep Girls Hoops, and she had me saying “wow” from the first sentence. Her maturity and confidence off the court made it easy to understand why she was so special on it. Bone showed out at a Christmas tournament, leading her team as an eighth grader, then carried that momentum into the summer with dominant performances at several showcases I attended. She can handle the ball, knock down the three, and get her teammates involved. Bone is a special player who drips with the “it” factor.

[player_tooltip player_id='1136118' first='Reah' last='Saunders'] helped lead her team to the state championship as a seventh grader and again as an eighth grader. The young baller now has her sights set on a third straight trip. Saunders plays with speed, poise, and a high basketball IQ. She knows when to push the tempo and when to settle her team into its offense. She communicates well on the floor and keeps defenders guessing with floaters, spin moves, and midrange pull-ups over bigger players. Defensively, she gets into the ball handler's space and uses her instincts and anticipation to disrupt the offense. Saunders is a smooth floor general who gets her teammates organized, gets them into their sets, and recognizes when to attack. She is fun to watch in transition, and it's where her creativity and basketball IQ really show. Saunders has the "it" factor, and that has been apparent since day one.
