The 2019 Traditional Bank Holiday Classic starts today at Lexington Catholic and continues through Monday. Sixteen teams will compete in the single-elimination tournament. There is also a losers' bracket, meaning that Lexington will see tons of high-quality basketball this weekend. Here's a preview of the first-round matchups with some players to watch.
<strong>Elizabethtown vs Anderson County</strong>
Elizabethtown is off to a great 5-0 start to the season, including a road win over a great Mercy team. Senior <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/whitney-hay/">Whitney Hay</a></strong> is the star for the Panthers, while senior forward <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/sydney-clark/">Sydney Clark</a></strong> and junior point guard <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/kayra-freeman/">Kayra Freeman</a></strong> are also off to strong starts. Senior <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/ellie-taylor/">Ellie Taylor</a></strong> will look to heat up after a relatively slow start to the year. Anderson County have by no means had a slow start themselves, coming into this game 4-1 and looking for a signature win. <strong>Amiyah Jenkins</strong> is one of the top sophomores in the state and will lead the way for the Lady Bearcats.
<strong>Scott vs Great Crossing</strong>
This will be a battle between two teams looking for their first win of the year. The Scott Lady Eagles are off to a disappointing 0-5 start to the season, due in part to the absence of junior <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/mya-meredith/">Mya Meredith</a></strong>. They'll look to rebound this weekend behind junior <strong>Sofia Allen</strong>, who is having a strong year despite her team's struggles. Great Crossing is also 0-5, having played one of the toughest schedules in the state so far. Junior <strong>Braylee McMath </strong>is having a great year as the Warhawks best player and sophomore <strong>Tomothi Williams </strong>will look to continue a strong start as well.
<strong>Simon Kenton vs Wayne County</strong>
Simon Kenton has started off hot this year, going 4-1 with wins over Ryle and George Rogers Clark, and their only loss coming against Sacred Heart. Senior guard <strong>Maggi Jones</strong> has been excellent running the offense, while sophomores <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/sereniti-webb/">Sereniti Webb</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/morgan-stamper/">Morgan Stamper</a></strong> are having great seasons of their own. Wayne County has had a less stellar year, starting 0-5. Senior <strong>Haleigh Criswell</strong> and sophomore <strong>Mallory Campbell</strong> are both having strong seasons scoring and rebounding and will look to get their team going this weekend.
<strong>Lexington Catholic vs Conner</strong>
Hosts Lexington Catholic look to continue their 4-1 start to the season with a strong showing at their home tournament. Sophomore guard <strong>Chloe Treece </strong>has scored well this season, junior forward <strong>Emma Franks</strong> has dominated on the boards, and junior <strong>Farah Weldon</strong> has been great at both to start the year. Conner has had their own strong start, staying busy with a 6-1 record. The inside combination of seniors <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/maddie-drummonds/">Maddie Drummonds</a> </strong>and <strong>Tyra Murphy</strong> has been impossible to stop, while senior guard <strong>Emily Zorich</strong> has lit it up on the perimeter.
<strong>Highlands vs Ashland Blazer</strong>
Highlands is off to a 3-1 start and has poured in plenty of points to start the year. Senior <strong>Piper Macke</strong> has poured it on in those three wins, not playing in the loss, while junior forward <strong>Kelsey Listerman</strong> has been consistently good both scoring and rebounding the ball. Ashland is having a great season, starting 6-1 against a wide array of competition. Senior guard <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/julia-parker/">Julia Parker</a></strong> has led the way offensively senior forward <strong>Morgan Bradley</strong>, and sophomore center<strong> Mikayla Martin </strong>have dominated on the boards in addition to strong offensive contributions.
<strong>Paul Laurence Dunbar vs Webster County</strong>
Dunbar joins the list of teams coming into this tournament after a good start to the year, going 3-1 this far. Junior <strong>Elise Elison-Coons </strong>has filled up the stat sheet in regards to both points and rebounds, while junior <strong>Tanaya Cecil </strong>has joined her in scoring and sophomore <strong>Aziah Campbell</strong> has joined her on the boards. Webster County has had an up and down 2-3 start to the year, struggling at times while looking strong at others. Junior guard <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/marissa-austin/">Marissa Austin</a></strong> has been unstoppable when her shot is falling, averaging 23.2 points per game so far. Junior <strong>Adeline McDyer </strong>and sophomore <strong>Raigin Price </strong>have contributed nicely with scoring and rebounding as well.
<strong>Boyd County vs Christian Academy-Louisville</strong>
Boyd comes in at 3-3 with all of their games thus far being relatively close and high-scoring. Junior <a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/harley-paynter/">Harley Paynter</a> leads this high-scoring attack, averaging 24.5 points per game this year, and juniors <strong>Bailey Rucker</strong> and <strong>Emma Borders </strong>have contributed with their scoring and rebounding respectively. They face one of the most loaded teams in the state, 5-1 CAC. Senior <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/shelby-calhoun/">Shelby Calhoun</a></strong> is currently second in the state with 15.4 rebounds per game to go with excellent offense, while junior <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/sydney-raque/">Sydney Raque</a></strong> and sophomore <strong><a href="https://prepgirlshoops.com/player/jaya-mcclure/">Jaya McClure</a></strong> have also contributed, largely with their strong outside shooting.
<strong>Boone County vs South Warren</strong>
Boone is off to a mixed start, being on both ends of blowouts on the way to a 4-3 record. Despite this, juniors <strong>Kelsie</strong> <strong>Anderson, Adrianna Haynes, </strong>and <strong>Skylar Holder</strong> have consistently been the team's strongest scorers and rebounders, sharing the responsibility in both areas. They face a South Warren team off to a slightly more positive start of 4-2. The Spartans are lead on by seniors <strong>Lexi Button</strong> and <strong>Taylor Enlow,</strong> who is also averaging 10.8 rebounds per game.
