The only thing that stands in between today and the first month of the 2025-26 high school girls basketball season – is the full month of October.

Until that arrives, many top prospects are still taking part in showcase events to ensure their skills remain sharp for when it is time to sport their high school colors.

One of those most recent events was Session Two of the Southeast Elite Showcase which was hosted the second Saturday of September at Ben Lippen School – a SCISA 4A institution in the Midlands.

We at Prep Girls Hoops were on hand at the home of the Falcons for the day's festivities. Following our recent articles on standout performances from seniors and juniors at the event, we shift our focus to sophomores and freshmen that shined this past weekend.

To say that Indian Land had a rough go of things moving up from 4A to 5A Division 2 was an understatement. Johnson was a bright spot for the Warriors as she was one of the leading scorers last season for her team – as a freshman. She has the ball handling skills of someone who primarily plays at the point and can shoot the rock from long range ala a two guard which is why she can placed in a starting five at either spot on the floor. Johnson understands that basketball can be a physical game and that means drawing contact that can place her at the line. She played in all 27 games last season for the Warriors.

Harris had a stint on the junior varsity team at 5A Division 2 Indian Land and possesses a game that is more than worthy of the much-anticipated varsity call-up. She is listed primarily as a point but has the pinpoint accuracy from behind the 3-point arc of a two. Harris plays heads-up defense and appears to be one step ahead of an opposing ball carrier as a defender. Her ball handling capabilities and basketball IQ also make her a worthwhile name for any team. She stands at approximately 5-foot-6 and displays eye-catching on-court leadership skills for someone at her stage of her career.

We got a glimpse as to why Vega-Soto was the leading point-getter last season for 5A Division 2 Indian Land. One reason is her accuracy from behind the 3-point arc. If Vega-Soto has the ball from 3-point range, she is very likely to take – and connect on – her try from deep. Vega-Soto can also turn defense into offense with the steals she collects. Not only was Vega-Soto the leading scorer last season for the Warriors, she led the team in assists and was second among Warriors players in steals. As one can see with her long range accuracy, she also led the team in 3-point percentage.

The sister act of Amoria and Azauria have taken their talents from 1A Denmark-Olar to the Eagles' nest that is 5A Division 2 Chapin. Wright will keep her hands outstretched on several occasions when she is on defense, brings a solid presence in the interior and is a very efficient rebounder. Wright competed initially at the varsity level as an eighth grader and played 22 contests for Denmark-Olar last season as a freshman. She was third among the Vikings in both rebounding and blocked shots. Wright primarily operates in the frontcourt at the four. She joins an Eagles team that qualified for the Lower State quarterfinals in 2024-25.

Wright is used to wearing blue given her stint at 1A Denmark-Olar. The hue of blue Wright will be wearing at 5A Division 2 Chapin will be a bit different than that of the Vikings. Wright displays excellent speed and agility when she has the ball in her hands. There are those that attack the rim, but few perform this basketball trait as ferociously and as fearlessly as Wright does. Her athletic career has also included volleyball alongside the basketball accolades she has amassed. As an eighth grader for a Denmark-Olar team that made it back to the 1A state championship game, Wright averaged 7.4 points, five steals and 3.9 rebounds in 22 contests.

McEntire had one of the signature breakout seasons among eighth graders last season among the SCISA ranks and the state as a whole. As she advances into her freshman campaign, McEntire is displaying signs that there will not be a second-year slump – this is simply who she is. She is an accurate 3-point shooter who excels as a runner of the floor and a transition playmaker. McEntire is difficult to contend with when she is on defense as she knows how to convert defense into offense. She plays with a high basketball IQ, is an accurate passer, can set up on the wing for 3-point attempts and delivers hustle plays as well. McEntire averaged nine points, 3.7 rebounds, three assists and two steals per contest last season with Ben Lippen.

The only thing that stands in between today and the first month of the 2025-26 high school girls basketball season – is the full month of October.
