Within Palmetto State hoops circles, one of the most anticipated weekends of the calendar year occurs in October.

That weekend is SCBCA Elite Camp weekend. Hosted by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association, a large amount of the state's premier players converge on the North Charleston Recreation Center to sharpen their skills and connect with fellow players – and coaches as well.

We at Prep Girls Hoops made our annual trek to the Lowcountry for Saturday's festivities. A number of the standout performances of the day were courtesy of point guards. Without further ado, here are a few who did just that.

There is a reason as to why we recently put Gray on our 2030 Watch List. Gray put together one of the signature seventh grade seasons in the state and is looking to build on that as an eighth grader at 4A A.C. Flora. Gray does not shy away from contact as she knows it can give her – and her team – opportunities at the free throw line. She also understands the importance of making the extra pass and can give a team worthwhile defense and blocking in the interior. Gray played in 26 games last season for coach Jacob Thompson's Falcons and averaged 6.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per contest.

What does one do following a state championship victory? Defend said state crown in hopes of going back-to-back. That will be the case for coach Byron Wimphrie's Walhalla team and her building on a productive freshman campaign will be crucial to a successful title defense. Cannon played in 28 games last season for the Razorbacks and averaged 6.2 points and 1.1 steals per contest. Opposing teams have to look out for Cannon when she is making plays in the transition game and they also have to look out for her on defense as she is a consistent threat to collect steals. Cannon can also add a 3-point shooting dimension to a team's offensive efforts.

Hemingway first played at the varsity level when she was in the eighth grade. Her development to this day where she is on the precipice of graduation has been a sight to behold. She stands at 5-foot-4, but places plenty of emphasis on getting in position to corral rebounds. This was apparent throughout much of last season with 5A Division 2 Conway. Hemingway averaged 10.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 steals in the 21 occasions where she sported Tigers green and gold. Defense, 3-point shooting and overall toughness are among the many positive attributes to Hemingway's game.

It was not that long ago that Gray landed a collegiate offer from Spartanburg Methodist College. Gray turns in more performances similar to what she got accomplished at this year's SCBCA Elite Camp and she has more collegiate offers in her future. After averaging 7.6 points and 1.7 steals for a Berkeley team that won the 5A Division 2 state championship, Gray looks to finish her high school career with a flourish. When Gray has a full head of steam attacking the rim, she is extremely difficult to contain. Playing with a heads-up attitude, court vision, ball handling and getting in position for rebounds are other positive aspects to her game.

Samuel is a rising name that is looking to take that next step with a team in 5A Division 2 Lugoff-Elgin that is looking to take that next step. Samuel helped the Demons last season to a five-win improvement over its 2023-24 version. A product of Carolina Hornets United which participated on the Nike EYCL circuit, she is a consistent playmaker on both the offensive end defensive ends. Her defense can lead to many miscues by the opposing team and those steals can be a precursor to additional offensive possessions wither Samuel's team is in a halfcourt set or she leads a fastbreak. Defenses have to watch out for her either attacking the rim or attempting a 3-pointer. Samuel built on a successful eighth grade season two years ago by averaging 14.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 steals as a freshman in 2024-25.
