The game was close through all four quarters, but a late push by the Lions helped them earn the win over the Wolves with a final score of 70 to 67. Both teams featured ranked athletes whose skills were on full display in the competitive matchup. Eastlake fed their star senior Keeli Burton early and often, and the 6’3″ center gave the Wolves 30 points and 11 rebounds. Bellarmine Prep had their own set of seniors in Callie Stevens Callie Stevens 5'6" | PG Bellarmine Prep | 2020 State WA and Julia Bordeaux Julia Bordeaux 5'11" | SG Bellarmine Prep | 2020 State WA . Stevens led her squad with 25 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Bordeaux contributed strong finishes in the paint, and a confident mid-range game to help her team with 23 points, and she also blocked a game-tying three-point attempt with less than 10 seconds in the game. Here’s a look at some of the top prospects.
Keeli Burton | 6’3″ C | EHS 2020
Keeli Burton is a tall and powerful center who is a handful to deal with in the paint, but she also impressed with her ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. Burton led her team with 30 points, many of which came from her work on the offensive glass, but she did add a three-pointer (1 of 2 from downtown). I was most impressed with Burton’s hands. Eastlake worked hard to get entry passes into their workhorse, and she was a reliable target in the high post. Likewise, Burton grabbed several rebounds that she tipped beyond the reach of her opponents before collecting. On defense, she is strong enough to displace just about anyone who is trying to get position on her, and she uses her size well, remaining vertical when challenging drives to the basket. *Featured Image
Callie Stevens Callie Stevens 5'6" | PG Bellarmine Prep | 2020 State WA | 5’7″ G | BPHS 2020
Stevens athleticism was on display from the tip. She was likely the fastest girl on the court all game and absolutely the quickest with the ball in her hands. Stevens also showed that she is a relentless competitor with game-long hustle and tough on-ball defense. Taking advantage of her speed, the senior found success getting to the basket in transition, but her long-range shooting was the strongest aspect of her game. Stevens scored 4 three-pointers, and a couple of them came from beyond the college 3-point line.
Julia Bordeaux Julia Bordeaux 5'11" | SG Bellarmine Prep | 2020 State WA | 6’0″ F | BPHS 2020
Bordeaux was impressive with the ball in her hands, scoring athletic lay-ins and knocking down mid-range jumpers consistently. She’s athletic at her size, and she also did a great job using her length on the defensive end of the court, sealing the game with a block on a game-tying three-point attempt in the waning seconds of the game.
Haley Huard Haley Huard 6'1" | SG Valor Christian | 2021 State CO | 6’1″ G | EHS 2021
Haley Huard Haley Huard 6'1" | SG Valor Christian | 2021 State CO ‘s combination of ball-handling and athleticism is a great compliment to Keeli Burton’s presence in the paint. Like Julia Bordeaux Julia Bordeaux 5'11" | SG Bellarmine Prep | 2020 State WA , Huard is both long and athletic at 6’1″, but she was even more dangerous with the ball in her hands. Huard found success driving to the basket, and she scored her first points of the game after grabbing a rebound and going coast-to-coast. The junior would also add 2 three-pointers, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Huard scored 9 of her 17 points in the final quarter of the game, trying to keep game close while Bellarmine began to make a late-game surge.
Ava Schmidt | 6’0″ F | EHS 2023
Ava Schmidt, a freshman, is a very intriguing prospect with great length and shot-blocking instincts. The 6-foot forward came off the bench for the Wolves, but her coach trusted her enough to put her on the court during the waning minutes of the game. Schmidt had two blocks in limited playing time, and she scored 10 points with one three-pointer and a converted three-point-play.
Kaylia Jackson Kaylia Jackson 5'8" | PG Eastlake | 2023 State WA | 5’8″ PG | EHS 2023
Another freshman for the Wolves, Kaylia Jackson Kaylia Jackson 5'8" | PG Eastlake | 2023 State WA is an athletic point guard with solid ball-handling. At 5’8″ she was able to grab rebounds and she dove on the floor for a loose ball, showing that she doesn’t shy away from contact. Jackson has been averaging around three assists per game coming off the bench for the Wolves, and with the offensive firepower of Burton and Huard, that skill will go a long way in helping her team to be successful. Eastlake currently has three sophomores and two freshmen on their varsity roster, so it will be interesting to watch as Kaylia continues to develop chemistry with her young teammates.
Delaney Rettko | 5’9″ F | BPHS 2021
Rettko found the ball in her hands through constant effort and hustle. She would finish the game with 7 points, but she had a much larger impact as a rebounder and passer, grabbing 4 boards and dishing out 4 assists. Rettko was her team’s inbounder, and because of her basketball IQ (and solid set plays), she continued to find her open teammates for good looks when imbounding on the offensive end of the court. Delaney is strong and plays physically, and she took on the challenge of battling with Keeli Burton in the post throughout the game.
