Continue ReadingThe Division 1 sectional tournament in Southwest Ohio is generally considered the most talented region in the state for an overall number of teams with the most talent. While Cincinnati has several very talented teams who will compete to come out of this regional, the Dayton area also has their share of talent.
The teams playing at the Vandalia Butler sectional will have to go through Wayne to advance, and that sectional will be filled with some good games.
Division 1 Sectionals @ Butler High School

#18 Xenia vs #2 Wayne 12:00- three Division One prospects will hit the floor for Wayne, as Bowling Green signee Nyla Hampton Nyla Hampton 5'7" | CG Wayne High School | 2020 State OH (5-8 Sr) enters the sectionals at 12.4 points and fellow senior Jaida Wolfork (5-10 Sr, Purdue-Ft. Wayne) is another key senior who can contribute from either the inside or out. The Warriors are led by 5-11 junior Bree Hall, the #1 2021 player in Ohio according to PGH Ohio. She is averaging 21.7 ppg. Alyssa Hargrove-Hall is another junior who at 5-10, can score at the rim or from the perimeter. A kid who often gets overlooked is Lovie Malone, who has the eye of several coaches and can contribute in a variety of ways. Xenia has some young talent, but will have a tough time with Wayne’s weapons. Their leading scorer is a freshman Kendall Sherman (5-8 guard) at just under 8 points per game. Right behind her is Brynna Mardis, a sophomore who is averaging 7.5 points per game. The winner will battle #16 Ponitz in the second round, who took a bye.
#10 Piqua vs #7 Miamisburg 1:30- the Piqua Indians have put together two consecutive good years, and this game should be a competitive one if their senior Tylah Yeomans (5-10 forward) continues her solid play. She is a great athlete who can score at the rim and make things happen. Sophomore Aubree Schrubb (5-11 post) is the best rebounder in the Miami Valley League and does a solid job defensively around the basket. Kenzie Anderson (5-6 soph), Tayler Grunkemeyer (5-5 sr) and Karley Johns (5-7 jr) add to the Indians punch. Miamisburg is a 10-10 team and has several players who I think can get it done. It all starts with 6-0 sophomore Anna Long, a versatile player who leads their offense. Juniors Sparkle Leigh and Abby Carter along with sophomore forward Addison Frymoyer can all step up big.
#14 Springfield vs #5 Bellbrook 3:00- The leading scorer in the GWOC brings her team into this challenge as Mickayla Perdue (5-8 senior) looks to carry her team to the upset. She is averaging 22.1 and can beat you in a varsity of ways. With transfer Camryn Nadir now out due to the transfer rule, the help for Perdue remains a mystery. One candidate to step up is Tymarah De’Armond (5-7 soph). Bellbrook makes the move to Division 1, and has put together a very good year once again, but what else is new. This well coached team has plenty of weapons including seniors Gigi Painter (headed to UNOH), Kayla Paul, Brooklynn Hall and Alexis Cable, along with junior Bailey Zerby (leading scorer at 11.3) and sophomores Deann Pryce (9.7 ppg) and Kendall Knisely. Freshman Kelley Griffin also has produced this season for the Golden Eagles.
