In a game rescheduled weeks later then it’s original date due to inclement weather, we’d finally get the match-up of two ranked teams in the 4A class. Piper currently ranked #2 and Baldwin #6.
First-quarter both teams would come out full speed ahead trading baskets for an early lead of 5-4 for Piper. Quarter would continue to be fast pasted for both teams who would struggle to maintain consistent control of the ball as well as shot-making abilities. Baldwin would get in early foul trouble nearly putting Piper in the bonus midway through the first. It wasn’t until Ayreona Carter, Grace Banes got a couple of shots to go down and Ali Vigil entering the game before Piper would get some offensive flow going to end the first with a 15-6 lead.
In the second quarter, the intriguing match-up of Carter for Piper and Harvey for Baldwin would make the game a bit more interesting. Carter was able to use her versatility to drag Harvey away from the basket to open lanes for teammates as well as knock down a couple of mid-range shots. While on the other end Harvey got a few buckets to go in close using her size to get deep. Vigil who was cleared to play just a week ago from a knee injury continued to be affected from beyond the arc, while Baldwin still struggled to get anything to fall from the perimeter. Piper would end the quarter on a run to open up a 30-14 league at the half.
3rd quarter was plagued by more Baldwin turnovers from great team defense of Piper across the board. Vigil was able to find openings off screens and knocked down a few mid-range jump-shots to keep adding to her point total. Carter would also have a couple of baskets in the quarter to help extend Pipers lead. Baldwin would just put up 5 points off of free throws to end the quarter down 42 – 19.
4th quarter Baldwin would try to make a point to get the ball inside to Jenna Harvey, which ended up unsuccessful more times than successful. Piper would get baskets from Carter, Banes and a few others from the foul stripe to continue to stretch their lead before sitting down the starter midway through.
4A continues to have some strong teams within, with the likes of Piper and Meige sitting at the top this win stretches some distance from the powerhouses in the top 2 seeds. Look for Baldwin to bounce back after tonight’s loss in their next game and look for Piper to keep becoming stronger heading into Sub-State.
