HER Skills Summit: 2030 Standouts

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — The 2nd annual Hoops By Ugland HER Skills Summit took place Sunday at the new Griffin Center on the campus of Los Alamitos high school. The skill development and competition-based camp drew 78 high school girls prospects from the classes of 2027-2033 and those prospects received hands' on coaching from high level high school and college coaches. Below we take a closer look at the 2030 prospects who stood out.    Monegan impressed with her combination of downhill speed and physicality which, combined with her fearlessness attacking the rim, made her one of the most effective finishers in the camp. The 5-foot-8 lefty wasn't just a bully-ball finisher, either, as she flashed a quick left to right crossover to get by her defender and fundamental footwork on pivots to spin off the help and score at the rim.     Don't let the 5-foot frame fool you, Lin proved to be a fearless competitor despite being one of the smaller - and younger - prospects in the gym. The freshman out of Walnut high school showed impressive true point guard feel for the position with her timely and high IQ drives and kicks but also packed plenty of scoring punch. Lin was consistent from three-point range off the catch and had a couple of soft-touched floaters fall in her favor. Where she was most impressive was on the defensive end as she used her quick hands and feistiness on the ball to speed up opposing ball handlers.     Murray is one of the most highly-touted incoming freshmen out west and it is easy to see why. The 5-foot-6 point guard is as dynamic of a player you'll find with the ball in her hands and her ability to make good things happen seems to come natural - but there has been plenty of work behind the scenes that has developed her elite basketball IQ. Murray is an elite three-level scorer who can take over a game with her bucket-getting prowess but she is also an elite creator with her vision and playmaker on the defensive end.     Hanaif operated with a smooth pace and did a nice job of translating the drill work into the game portion of the event. The 5-foot-8 combo guard used a crafty handle to get into the lane where she played off of two feet and found open teammates with timely and accurate passes. Scoring-wise, Hanaif flashed smooth shooting mechanics and touch from three and mid-range areas of the floor.     Mallari, the first of the pair of twins we will write about, was one of the most disruptive defenders in the event. Her combination of lateral speed, a strong frame and quick hands and anticipation allowed her to pressure and contain the ball and jump passing lanes for steals. Offensively, Mallari was a consistent three-point shooter off the catch with time and space.     Kylie's game is very similar to her twin sister's in that she is a high level competitor who came into the camp with no fear. She was a menace of an on-ball defender who contained drives, got tips on passes and was consistently in the right spot in help-side situations. Offensively, Mallari used her combination of shiftiness, quick change of speed and direction and low center of gravity to earn paint touches where she scored for herself or made a high IQ pass to a teammate.     The best way to describe Jones' game is simply a "basketball player." The 5-foot-10 guard/wing has the positional size, basketball IQ and dribble, pass and shoot skill-set to create offense for herself and teammates in transition and half-court offense. The freshman at Mira Costa consistently made the right play, was rarely sped up and showed off her two-way versatility. Jones' offensive package is complete with three-point and mid-range touch along with the ability to get to the rim.
