We got our first previews of the annual Breakdown Fall League series a couple of weeks ago, but this past Sunday things kicked into high gear. With more than 90 girls varsity teams competing at sites around the Twin Cities, there was no shortage of good basketball to watch. I opted to spend the day at Jefferson High School in Bloomington, where more than 20 varsity games took place.

As always, finding new prospects with the potential to play at the next level was top of mind. Thankfully, players who fit that description were not in short supply. Here are four underclassmen who left a lasting impression this week.

With the Mustangs somewhat shorthanded on Sunday, it was Frank who was tasked with running the offense. While she isn't the biggest player on the court, the 5'7 guard (pictured above) possesses plenty of speed and a sophisticated understanding of the game. Campbell keeps a tight handle on the ball under pressure, is always scanning the floor, and plays with a keen sense of pace and timing. Perfectly capable of scoring for herself, the Mounds View freshman is an unselfish passer who knows how to get the ball in the hands of the most open player. On the defensive end, Campbell impressed with her assertiveness on the ball. Unafraid to take a some risks, Frank pulled off two demonstrative blocks in transition, displaying remarkable body control in mid-air.

These days, the talent level of incoming 7th and 8th graders is at an all time high, and Wolf certainly is no exception. Now in her second year with the East Ridge varsity squad, the 8th grade guard gave a noteworthy performance on Sunday. Using speed to her advantage in all areas of the game, Harper was quick on the attack, handled the ball well through traffic, and used a variety of finishes at the rim to keep the ball away from the defense. On defense, her impressive lateral movement meant that she could keep up with most opponents for the full 94 feet. Wolf's substantial work ethic, disruptive defense on the perimeter, and gritty, no-fear attitude are all hallmarks of her game.

It wasn't long on Sunday before Fajolu jumped out. With a lengthy build and plenty of mobility as well, the 5'9 wing has many of the physical tools needed to succeed at the next level. But what really impressed me about Ire's game was her effort on both ends of the floor. Despite the low stakes of a fall league scrimmage, the East Ridge sophomore defended with energy, battled hard for rebounds, and even took a charge on one particular possession. While she may be a newcomer to the Raptors varsity lineup, Fajolu's innate feel for the game, continuous movement off the ball, and willingness to focus on the details were all bright spots for the young East Ridge squad.

Another youngster on the East Ridge roster this season, Ecker's speed, powerful build, and overall athleticism were immediately apparent, A solidly built guard with ample length and wide shoulders, the Raptors freshman plays with the strength and physicality of a much older player. Emi's energy and intensity on both ends of the floor also stood out right away. She attacked each and every possession, with the same flat-out effort. While it may have resulted in some extra fouls this weekend, Ecker's motor and desire to compete were off the charts. A strong ball handler and rebounder with great instincts and timing across the board, it's a mystery how Emi didn't end up on our radar sooner. She'll definitely be a factor for East Ridge in the years to come.
