High school girls basketball in South Jersey continues to be as competitive as ever, and that includes the Colonial Conference.
Here’s a list of five rising juniors to watch in the Liberty Division for this upcoming season.
Aysiah Maldonado, G/F Audubon: Maldonado shined on an Audubon team that didn’t feature the depth of other schools in the division. She led the team in points as a sophomore, averaging well over 10 points per game, and much of that came from her ability to score from just about anywhere on the court. Whether it be a shot in the paint, a tough runner or a deep three, Maldonado is able to command a game and start a game-winning run. Expect her to only grow in that role this season.
Maggie Campbell, PG Haddon Heights: Campbell is tall for a point guard, especially as a sophomore, and that really helps her create space on offense. She has great off-ball movement to allow her to find many opportunities for an open three. Campbell really excels from beyond the arc, and has a pure shot. Her height also is to her advantage on defense, where she can get down low for a rebound, or crowd a defender for a steal. Campbell will be one of the Garnets’ best all-around players next season in a program that has a lot of young talent.
Marquae Richardson-Muse, G/SF Haddon Heights: Richardson-Muse is a versatile player, able to play both guard positions and at forward. That has allowed her to work on all facets of her game, like running the offense from the point. She’s a precision passer, but also can cut through the lane well, weaving through defenders for a layup or chance in the paint. Her long legs allow her to get down the floor quickly, but also allow her to play both at the top of the key on defense and down low, making her someone to watch out for come this season.
Olivia Magee, C/F West Deptford: Magee is West Deptford’s go-to shot blocker and big in the middle. Don’t be fooled by her size as while she is a force to be reckoned with in the paint, she’s also agile and isn’t afraid to play out toward the perimeter. On offense, her game is played in the paint, but attracting defenders towards her due to her height allows her to pass the ball to the outside, creating open looks from three for her teammates. The tandem of her and Zaniyah Carr are going to thrive this season.
Maddie Eife, PF Collingswood: Eife has handles, and it shows as she gets on the break. She has a lot of confidence when the ball gets to her, which is a great sign as a sophomore that she can be and will be a leader. Her passing is very impressive, immediately giving the ball up if she doesn’t have a shot and not forcing up anything she doesn’t need to. Her off-ball movement is very good and that has led to a lot of scoring opportunities, especially the quick midrange jumper, and if she can get more consistent from three, she’s unstoppable.
There is plenty more to look at as the season approaches, so look out for more player previews.
