A Few Nuggets from Title IX

A Few Nuggets from Title IX

The annual Title IX Holiday event has become my favorite tournament of the high school season. With 74 teams from across the country and Canada competing in the D.C. Armory, it is quite the spectacle. If you're a high school coach looking for competition and exposure for your team, this is the place. 147 coaches from 86 colleges watched all day action on five courts, including a division for junior colleges. If you have game you are sure to be noticed by some of the media and scouting services in the building. I was in the attendance for the first day of action. Here are some thoughts... SHE DID NOT GET THE MEMO Roland Park's senior guard Ja'niah Henson obviously did not get the memo that small guards are not supposed to dominate games. The Morgan State signee had an awesome tournament and was especially effective in her team's big win over National Christian Academy. She flat out knows how to play the game and controlled the pace and tempo against bigger guards. Her fundamentals are air tight and she is fearless. I think Morgan State got a steal but I'm happy to have her here locally so we can enjoy the show. 4A LOOKS DEEP The MPSSAA playoffs will be here before you know it. I am especially looking forward to watching the 4A section play out. After watching a tough North Point team battle with Pikesville (1A), and Paint Branch go to war with St. John's, I'm convinced it is wide open. North Point has a pair of ballers in junior Kennedy Davis and Latavia Jackson that can cause major problems. Davis is a six footer that looks like a match up problem waiting to happen. Jackson is a skilled senior guard that aggressively attacks the rim and has been in big playoff games before. Montgomery county's Paint Branch squad looks like a well coached bunch and senior guard Katerra Myers makes them go. Myers is unsigned and I think she has been overlooked. She had a solid showing against St. John's, directing traffic, distributing and scoring as well. She can definitely help a college program that needs a strong lead guard with the ability to play off ball. Paint Branch has size and some depth so I expect them to be a tough out. Both of these teams could make a run to the class 4A final four in March. Myers BLOOMING LIKE A FLOWER Kaniyah Harris of CH Flowers is one of my favorite players from the class of 2020. The versatile guard is a scoring machine and is particularly crafty with her mid range game. She has an array of floaters and pull ups in her bag and she's not afraid to use them. Her exceptional athleticism has helped her emerge on defense as well. I'm looking forward to following her throughout the season and into the spring. Harris
