A storied rivalry that has featured some incredible players for both teams over the years, Manasquan edged the Belmar school, 55-52, in a thriller on Wednesday. Let’s take a look at five takeaways from the meeting.
A complete effort from Manasquan: Manasquan got it done with a balanced effort, as four players hit double figures. Junior Mary Elizabeth Donnelly led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds in a double-double effort. Junior Brooke Hollawell Brooke Hollawell 5'6" | PG Manasquan | 2022 State NJ added 14 points, sophomore Rylyn Orlando contributed 13 points and two blocks and junior Dorothy Loffredo put in 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Manasquan did enough on defense to get the win.
Abby Antognoli, as expected, carries St. Rose: Antognoli, a St. Rose senior and Lafayette women’s basketball commit, carried the Purple Roses with 26 points, half of the team’s total points. She knocked down five 3-pointers and was the main game plan offensively for St. Rose. Antognoli had a great look at a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired, but her shot rimmed out.
Manasquan got it done shorthanded: The Warriors were without forward Georgia Heine Georgia Heine 5'10" | SG Manasquan | 2022 State NJ and freshman Hope Masonius, but that didn’t derail the team. Manasquan showed it can win through adversity and get steady contributions from its group all across the roster.
St. Rose, also shorthanded, saw other contributors: The Purple Roses were playing without some players as well, as Maggie Cavanaugh and Niasya Ervin missed the game. Outside of Antognoli, senior Maureen Stapleton and sophomore Rosie Scognamiglio, a transfer out of New York, reached double figures. Stapleton finished with 10 points and nine rebounds and knocked down some big triples, while Scognamiglio totaled 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
No fans, no problem: While it was an empty gym in Belmar on Wednesday, both teams played with great energy and fed off the great rivalry. Having a game of this magnitude early in the season should certainly help both teams. For Manasquan, it snapped a four-game skid in the head-to-head series, and the Warriors left Belmar with their first road win in the series since February of 2017.
