Teams not only switched divisions within the Colonial, but new teams entered the fray, most notably Gloucester City, who finished the season atop the Patriot Division, a perfect 10-0 in division play and 11-4 overall.
Haddonfield was the top dawg in the conference once again as the Bulldawgs finished the season with a 14-1 record, a perfect 10-0 in the Colonial and Liberty Division.
Prep Girls Hoops will be taking a closer look inside the conference, starting out with the conference standouts.
Keegan Douglas – PG, Haddonfield
Douglas was arguably the best player in the conference and in South Jersey last season, and she was as good if not better in 2021, averaging nearly 20.0 PPG as a senior. There was truly no one better in the Colonial than Douglas, and she single-handedly accounted for just under 43 percent of Haddonfield’s offense this season. She most notably led the Bulldawgs in scoring and three-point shooting in 2021 and was the key cog to another title-winning campaign.
Allyson Velez – G, Gloucester City
Velez came into this season an unknown commodity in the Colonial as Gloucester City made its debut in the conference in 2021. However, teams quickly found out what this senior guard was all about as she led the Lions in scoring, averaging 12.3 PPG for a team that would finish atop the Patriot Division. This was a senior-heavy team, but Velez took full advantage of the shortened season, also leading the team in perimeter shooting, averaging just under 1.5 made threes a game. As far as senior years go, Velez had one of the most dominant in program and conference history.
Zaniyah Carr – C, West Deptford
The Eagles were in the mix throughout the season to be one of the best programs in the Liberty Division, and this season, they were led by senior center Zaniyah Carr, who was as dominant a forward as they come in the Colonial. Carr led West Deptford in scoring during the 2021 season, averaging 11.8 PPG and was a double-double machine. She really manned the middle well, playing with authority in the lane. Teams had trouble getting through her on offense as she was a stout defender, recording several multi-block games. Carr’s tenacity on the block is what set her apart as a premier forward in the Colonial.
Brooklyn Graham – G, Paulsboro
If you wanna talk about a real turn-around story, Paulsboro was that team in New Jersey. Coming off a 2-20 season, the Red Raiders finished 9-6 this season in the Patriot Division of the Colonial. That was due in large part to freshman superstar guard Brooklyn Graham, who led Paulsboro in scoring in 2021, averaging 12.9 PPG and 2.4 APG. She attacked the lane as well as anyone in the conference and she came out of the gate aggressive, scoring a career-high 23 points in her first high school game against Woodbury. She’s going to be an impressive watch for several years to come, so stay tuned for her and the Red Raiders.
Angelina Zagone – F, Gateway
Zagone was another freshman standout in the conference in 2021, leading Gateway in scoring this season as the Gators finished the season with a 7-4 record. She averaged 12.0 PPG and 9.0 RPG in her first high school season, recording four double-doubles, and a career-high, 18-point, 13-rebound performance against Salem Tech on February 25. Zagone also averaged 1.0 BPG for Gateway, showing off an impressive post game on both sides of the ball and definitely someone who should be putting up a double-double season average as early as next season.
Prep Girls Hoops will be continuing to recap the Colonial Conference season as part of its full recap of the 2021 New Jersey high school girls basketball season, so stay tuned for more.
