We will cover who you should watch for, the teams that could come out of nowhere, and of course, the bracket buster candidate. We will also list five players from each class that you need to keep an eye on throughout the bracket as they can really change the game in a hurry. The complete Region 5 bracket is posted below.
The Teams
Cedar Rapids, Washington (15-4)
Valley (15-5)
Waterloo, West (12-8)
Dubuque, Senior (9-11)
Des Moines, Roosevelt (8-11)
The Favorite
Valley
Valley is the favorite in this one as they are such a potent offensive team. They score 72.0 points a game and have three of the top seven scorers in the region on the team. If Washington and Valley meet it will be a matchup of a team that takes really good care of the ball and a team that creates a lot of steals. If Valley takes care of it, they should be able to get to the state tournament. Maryland commit senior Zoe Young is their leading scorer as she pours in 23.1 points a game.
The Sleeper
Cedar Rapids, Washington
They are scoring 65.9 points a game this season and are shooting 44.5 percent from the floor. They do shoot it pretty well from the free throw line as they are at 70 percent on the year. This is a team that creates a ton of turnovers and do pretty well at not turning it over themselves. Cedar Rapids, Washington could be a team that upsets Valley. Freshman Hannah Stuelke is leading Washington with 16.6 points a game.
The Outside Shot
Waterloo, West
Waterloo, West has turned the ball over 309 times this year which is the second worst mark in the region. With that being said, they do score 53.0 points a game while only giving up 45 points a game. If they can get into a low scoring affair, they can beat anyone in the region with their team. Senior NaTracia Ceaser leads the team with 14.5 points a game.
