Throughout this month (and next), I will be highlighting selected teams across South Florida. Today, my focus is on Miami Palmer Trinity. The Falcons went 12-8 last season under head coach George Montes. 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="221696" first="Annalise" last="Lindsay"] is a key departure after transferring to Miami High.
Key players/roster:
2023 [player_tooltip player_id="91640" first="Emily" last="Montes"]
2023 Isabella Porto
2024 [player_tooltip player_id="217669" first="Jade" last="Leon"]
2024 Amanda Kaplan
2024 Mati Veloso
2024 Melina Ruiz
2024 Priya Alibhai
2025 [player_tooltip player_id="221657" first="Angelina" last="Deleon"]
2026 Brynne Sullivan
2028 Missy Nieves
The Falcons are a young team led by Montes, who has committed to Columbia. However, do not confuse young with inexperienced. The 5-foot-10 point guard averaged 15.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.9 steals. Leon is a 5-foot-10 guard that averaged 13.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Those are two guards for the Falcons with length and athleticism. Both are playmakers and elevate their teammates production. The Falcons averaged 53 points per game last season...so do the math.
Look for Isabella Porto to take another step forward as a 5-foot-11 forward. Porto finished behind Lindsay in rebounding after grabbing six per game (3.4 offensive). That offensive number tells me she plays with good awareness and is tough around the glass. Porto is huge in this area and to the Falcons' overall success. Her offensive production should increase after averaging just under five points per game. Porto could be an X-factor.
Deleon and Kaplan each averaged over seven points per contest. Both are 5-foot-8 guards with athleticism. They could be huge contributors as Palmer Trinity looks to fill production after Montes and Leon. Palmer Trinity has a lot upside if their other players take that next step.
Alibhai is a transfer from Gulliver Prep. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard averaged six points and 2.8 rebounds per game with the Raiders. Alibhai has some shooting ability out to the 3-point line.
The Falcons lost six games by a combined 28 points. Flip those around and Palmer Trinity wins 20 games. I think the experience off last season could help turn some of those close games into wins this fall. Led by Montes and Leon, Palmer Trinity should be right there as one of the best teams in the area.
