The brass of South Florida might be Miami Country Day. The Lady Spartans have won seven state championships since 2014. Miami Country Day went 23-3 under <strong>Ochiel Swaby</strong>. Worth noting, the Spartans went on a 21-game win streak en route to the Class 3A state title. 2021 <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="91494" first="Andrea" last="Daley"]</strong> (<strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong>) and transfer <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="219988" first="Charisse" last="Martin"]</strong> (<strong>Blanche Ely</strong>) are key departures.
Betting against this team season after season would be silly.
One reason Miami Country Day is strong is because of [player_tooltip player_id="219935" first="Aicha" last="Keita"]. This prospect is very long with a 6’4 wingspan at 6-foot-1. Keita controls any airspace with her reach and will block shots at a high rate. She could probably record a half dozen blocks during any game. You have to put her potential as high given her frame. Keita is also a terrific student.
2024 guard <strong>Sofia Mendez</strong> is a transfer from <strong>Carrollton School of the Sacred</strong> <strong>Heart</strong>. Mendez has scoring ability as she was one of the top scorers on the team each of the last three seasons. The Spartans will represent a new challenge for her.
I have touched on [player_tooltip player_id="91642" first="Kristina" last="Godfrey"] as being a great guard. The backcourt prospect averaged 10.7 points and 6.6 assists per game while shooting 51 percent from the floor. Moreover, Godfrey went (21-of-67) 31 percent from behind the 3-point line. She has great vision and feel for the game.
2024 [player_tooltip player_id="217667" first="Kayla" last="Nelms"] is one of the top players in her class. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the floor. She also shot 46 percent from behind the arc. Nelms is tough guard when you factor in her height.
Other contributors include [player_tooltip player_id="219989" first="Isabella" last="Guevara"] and [player_tooltip player_id="221703" first="Kaliyah" last="Morales"].
Miami Country Day is a fun team to watch and always a favorite for a deep run in Lakeland. Look for a big season from Nelms as the sky is the limit for her.
