Kettle Moraine brought another gold ball to the Lake Country after winning their second consecutive state title. All four teams were talented enough to win, and all four schools put on a show for all in attendance.
F: Grace Grocholski Grace Grocholski 5'10" | SF Kettle Moraine | 2023 State WI
The Laser senior dominated yet another state title game, albeit not as much as last year, but was still the best player on the floor in another D1 State Title game. Grocholski finished with 24 points and five rebounds in the win over Brookfield East and scored eight quick points that would be the separation for the entirety of the game. Her shot-making ability is next level, and she was a threat whenever she touched the ball.
F: Maddy McGath
The Brookfield East forward’s athleticism made the Spartans’ 2-3 zone work to perfection this season and in the state tournament. The future West Virginia Mountaineer volleyball player altered countless shots around the rim if she didn’t get blocks on them. I thought she was outstanding around the basket on both ends of the floor.
Is there more to say about Wisconsin’s Ms. Basketball in 2023? Arnold was extraordinary in the state semifinals against Brookfield East but fell short. Arnold’s impact goes deeper than any of her many awards. Young kids look up to her and want to be like her. I would not be surprised if a generation of kids coming up in the future changed the perception of the talent in Wisconsin, and it’d tie back to her impact on the younger kids in the Milwaukee area and the state as a whole.
G: Rainey Welson Rainey Welson 5'9" | CG Hortonville | 2025 State WI
The Hortonville wing almost helped the Polar Bears make an unreal comeback in the state semifinals. Her ability to score in bunches is an experience, and even though she didn’t help Hortonville get any farther, her scoring against Kettle Moraine was excellent.
G: Maya Kovacic Maya Kovacic 5'8" | CG Brookfield East | 2026 State WI
The only freshman on this team is Maya Kovacic Maya Kovacic 5'8" | CG Brookfield East | 2026 State WI . She earned the trust of her teammates last summer and paid it back tenfold against Germantown. Her scoring in crunch time against the Warhawks put her on the map on the biggest stage. If you didn’t know who she was going into the Resch Center, you probably did on the way out. She made herself a household name in 36 minutes and earned it.
