She has a very smooth jumper that she flashed a number of times, as well as the size and finishing ability to score off the dribble and with her back to the basket. I liked McLaughlin’s basket cut and finish through body contact in the first half, as well as her dribble middle + drop step in the post in the second. I can tell Hayden has high IQ and understands how to draw multiple defenders — the second two players jumped to stop her drive, she fired a kickout pass to a teammate for an open shot. The past couple of seasons, when Algona wins, McLaughlin usually has an impressive outing. That is not always the case but the two have gone hand-in-hand for awhile now and that should be the case even more during her next two years at the Varsity level. Lengthy, durability, touch, coordinated balance, a willingness to get physical. There are just a few of the reasons that McLaughlin has nice showings throughout the Winter season. It’s hard for others to matchup with her within their system and I’m hoping that’s the case for another go around this upcoming season.

McLaughlin is someone that opened up some eyes last season for her Freshman year at Algona High School and she is looking to build on that this upcoming season. This is someone that may not of grabbed a spot in our Top 25 just yet for the 2027 Class but it’s coming. She has lengthy arms, quick feet, and she is always willing to help out a fellow teammate. When you pair that along with her natural instincts, you start to see the promise. With her All Iowa Attack program this AAU season, she has been a constant and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
