On Friday, March 1st I attended the 5A CHIP at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Phoenix. The Sunrise Mountain Mustangs took on the Canyon View Jaguars.

The first half was a little sloppy for both teams and possibly some nerves and Sunrise led 15-13. Heading into the 4th quarter it was more the same at 24-23 but the 4th quarter had more scoring and they battled back and forth and Canyon View forced OT at 37-all.

The story line in OT was the extra opportunities the Jaguars got on the glass and cashed in the on the FT line to give the girls their 1st Championship ever at 49-41 in OT.

Here were the standouts from the game

[player_tooltip player_id='205659' first='Mia' last='Burgess'] Canyon View

A forward who can play both spots on offense and defense. She scores with ball fakes into a layup and will hit from mid-range. She makes her money on the glass to get extra possessions and will block shots. She scored 7 points with 10 rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id='608450' first='Jaila' last='Flowers'] Canyon View (Pictured)

A physical power forward can post up inside with counter moves versus real size. She scores on put backs and gets to the free throw line in bunches. She had an impressive 17 points and 15 rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id='608451' first='Aaliyah' last='Rogers'] Canyon View

One of the top on-ball defenders in the AIA has elite lateral quickness and athleticism to keep her opponents in front of her. She rebounds well and is a very good passer. She will score on catch threes with range and transition layups with either hand.

[player_tooltip player_id='639464' first='Cynthia' last='Tewksbury'] Canyon View

An undersized scoring point guard came up big in the 4A state finals. She scored 10 points with a floater off the dribble, mid-range jumper and a couple triples with confidence. She had zero turnovers with two assists and even three steals showing her quickness and fight on defense.

[player_tooltip player_id='608973' first='Savanna' last='Dotray'] Sunrise Mountain

One of the more unique point forward types as their true facilitator at great size. She is good in the passing lanes to collect steals and will score with either hand in the paint. She takes the contact well and rebounds and blocks shots. She finished with 7 points 11 rebounds and 2 assists.

[player_tooltip player_id='837250' first='Addison' last='Weimann'] Sunrise Mountain

The Mustangs post player is highly skilled with hook shots thru contact, turn around jumpers she can kiss it off the glass and has an easy FT stroke. She gobbles up all boards near her and is hard to move in the paint plus will blocks shots. She finished with 13 points. 7 rebounds and 4 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='855693' first='Jaden' last='Maza'] Sunrise Mountain

A good sized wing forward is a catch three point shooter. She can ball fake and get to the basket but is best off the catch. She actually hit a clutch three under a minute in regulation and one three in OT. She rebounded the ball well with six boards and brings energy.
