One play that stood out was when she turned down an open three and settled for a one-dribble pull-up from the mid-range, passing up a good shot for a better one. A smart, savvy guard, she helped lead STARS Basketball Club S40 to a 45–38 win over M14 3SSB.

Ava let the game come to her and didn’t force the issue. She made strong drives, showing her ability to initiate contact and finish through it. She facilitated well and pushed the pace in transition, doing a great job finding open teammates running the floor. Ava imposed her will offensively late in the game, attacking on back-to-back drives before drilling a dagger triple from the top of the key to put an exclamation point on the performance.

Hughes is one of the top players in the state’s Sophomore class and didn’t do anything to change that at camp. She played at a high level, made shots and showed advanced playmaking skills all day long and showed she can run an offense in the full court or when having to orchestrate a little more in the half court.

Ava led McCracken County in scoring during her freshman season, averaging 15 points per game, and guided them to their 10th straight district title. She has impressive speed, excels at attacking the basket, and is a terrific finisher at the rim, even through contact. Ava is also a deadly shooter from distance and displays sharp defensive instincts, often coming up with timely steals. I see big things are ahead for her.
