Against a bigger bodied, physically stronger Garden Plain interior Bernal keyed the Dragon defense. Her length, quickness and athleticism were evident. On the offensive end the growth in game with the ball was evident. New to me was seeing her attack defenders from the corners. Off the bounce she used long strides slicing across the lane to elevate for swooping, over-the-rim layups.

Bernal played a key role in the Dragons’ run to the 3A state championship. She brought good size to the table against bigger teams, playing a significant defensive role. She handled the ball helping her guards against full court pressure. Huge was her effectiveness scoring inside 10′ of the hoop and in knocking down her free throws. In her three state tournament games she went an impressive 13/15.
