One of my favorite defensive plays of the spring belongs to McKean. A couple of weeks ago at the Dakota Challenge in Sioux Falls, we watched Ella literally rip the ball out of an opponent’s hands and race the length of the floor for a basket, all in one fluid sequence that was equal parts brains and brawn. That play is emblematic of what Ella brings to the court: strength, toughness, and a healthy level of competitiveness on which her game is built. The Sioux Falls Washington guard uses her physicality exceptionally well, whether she’s defending bigger players, fighting through contact, or powering to the basket herself. She is a focused, no-nonsense competitor who contributes all over the floor and is willing to do whatever her team needs.
