Expert Analysis
Gabrielle Bean | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Graycin shattered the school record for most three-pointers in a game, knocking down nine threes in the first half and quickly adding her 10th early in the second before the starters were pulled. Shooting an incredible 77 percent from the floor, she finished with 30 points in just 18 minutes of action. The dominant performance fueled a 68–23 team victory, as she single-handedly outscored the opponent.

Graycin made the journey to the GVSU Elite Camp from Wisconsin and was one of the best prospects in the gym. Graycin’s combination of height, three-point accuracy, IQ on both ends, inside/outside versatility, and physical stature will translate to the college level. She was one of the most methodical and efficient shooters during the three-point shooting warmup. Graycin closed out hard on the perimeter to block a shot, secured the loose ball, pushed the ball, and dished an extra pass to an open teammate for the assist. She jumped into passing lanes to pick off passes and scanned the floor while pushing the ball in transition. Graycin drained a wing three with textbook mechanics and made a smart backdoor cut for a layup. Graycin had a strong day at camp, and I enjoyed watching her play against some of Michigan’s best prospects.

The biggest thing for Phillips was getting healthy. After a back injury heavily limited her action last year, she’s back this season and looks like a new kid. Phillips is more active, plays lower on the defensive end, and will battle through some contact around the basket. The Waunakee native is a stretch four or five at the next level and has proven more defensive prowess now that she’s physically capable of handling the contact down there. She’s an X-factor for the Warriors.

Not having pain on the court will make a difference for Phillips. In Waunakee’s fall league, Phillips looked more comfortable moving laterally and athletic than I’ve ever seen her look. She has plenty of confidence to let it rip from beyond the three-point line and should get some open looks with the backcourt the Warriors have. However, her activity was at a different level than in the past, likely because she’s playing without pain, and I’m eager to see what that looks like this season.

The Waunakee wing saw limited minutes this season. That was due to a lingering injury that affected her in the minutes she played this season. I thought she came a long way last summer, showed signs of being comfortable as a wing, and made some shots in bunches. There were still inconsistencies, but I expected that. Whenever a kid changes everything about how they’ve played in the past, there’ll be growing pains, but she showed flashes of possibly being a scholarship-level wing. Phillips returned to action last month, and she’ll be an interesting one to follow for the rest of the summer.
