The girls’ Carolina Classic championship contest between Wilson and South Florence featured two of the top 4A teams in the state – and two region rivals. Nelson’s nine points helped in what was a 56-54 victory for the Tigers. What had to impress onlookers even more than that was Nelson’s defense as she was more than willing to take on tough defensive assignments. She also helps out greatly with Wilson’s rebounding efforts. Nelson is one of three team co-captains for coach Ki’Ari Cain’s Tigers and is one of four that is part of Wilson’s 2026 graduating class. She gets that playing in the paint means being physical and the willingness to draw contact and take her chances at the free throw line.

Nelson is a multi-sport athlete who excels in basketball, softball and in volleyball at 4A Wilson. She is one of the three seniors that first-year Ki’Ari Cain will be working alongside as Wilson looks to build upon a what was a stellar 2024-25. Nelson played in 28 games last season for the Tigers. She fuses together speed with a high basketball IQ that can enable her to go from defending on the perimeter to playing defense in the paint. That can lead to many blocked shots for Nelson as a defender. Collecting steals and effective rebounding are also noteworthy elements to Nelson’s game.

Nelson, part of Team Goodson, keeps a full athletic plate. Throughout her career, not only has she played basketball but also volleyball and softball. Nelson stands at 5-foot-11 and was one of the taller names on hand in the Pee Dee. That height combined with a well-developed skillset particularly shows up on defense with her ability to block shots. The ability to handle the ball is another attribute she possesses along with having an imposing build of a four or a five. Nelson is one of three seniors returning for 4A Wilson and those upperclassmen will be important pieces to another winning season for coach Ki’Ari Cain’s Tigers.
