York High School has a few prospects that could play at the next level and those prospects have shown a lot of promise so far this Winter. One that comes to my head right away is CG – Lainey Portwine Lainey Portwine 5'9" | CG York | 2025 State NE . Portwine is coming off of a double-double, while she filled up the stat sheet last Friday. York secured a big victory against Malcolm by 6 points and Portwine’s stat line was the highlight of the contest. She finished with 18 points (6-14), 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. This performance may come to a surprise to some but not if you understand what Portwine brings to the hardwood. She is a versatile prospect that can be moved all around the court and she will yield positive results. It really just depends where the coaches want to place her in that moment. We are only a few weeks from the Post Season. If York can keep up this with this same energy, they are going to be a group to watch come Playoff time.

“I covered Portwine recently as being a prospect out of Nebraska that York High School is going to look to a lot this Winter for production so I’m glad to see that she is holding her own here today. This is someone that has good wherewithal on the floor, while being a vocal leader. Offensively, she has shown that she has good fundamentals to beat her defender off of the dribble, with the ability to finish the play in a number of different ways going toward the rim. Defensively, she sticks on her matchups with realitive ease, making it a tough time for them to get open or a clean look on constant possessions. The CCS Bison have some ballers and I’m glad they were able to come to Chicago to show out, Portwine included.”

An AAU team that I don’t see play enough is the CSS Bison out of Nebraska. They are filled with some of the top prospects in the state and worth having a look at if you have chance. At their CG position, they have Lainey Portwine Lainey Portwine 5'9" | CG York | 2025 State NE of York High School. I’ve mentioned York the past few days because of the prospects that they will be returning and another one of those prospects to talk highly about is Portwine. She is someone that had a role last season on Varsity and that role is only going to grow during the 2024-2025 season. She will be looked at to do a little bit of everything, while trying to lead by example. Something that is tough but possible to do for someone with her ability.

Lainey Portwine Lainey Portwine 5'9" | CG York | 2025 State NE put together a Junior Season that she can be proud of at York High School but she isn’t going to be satisfied. Portwine is a Combo Guard, who makes good choices with the basketball in her possession. She works hard on both sides of the ball, while being someone who can make things happen whenever her team’s offense might happen to break-down. Portwine isn’t going to kill you by scoring the ball but moreso by doing everything else. She does have the ability to make her own moves and create but a majority of the time, she is a great hustle player. She does the dirty work that others don’t want to do and she never asks for a thank you or appreciation. Instead, she just puts her head down and she keeps on working. I’m interested in how she is going to do this AAU season with her CCS program. If she does what she does best, the sky is the limit. Every team needs hustle players, who makes things happen and in this case, Portwine could be that player in more ways than one.

Lainey Portwine has shown promise and dedication over the past two + seasons of high school ball and that is all starting to pay off. Each game it seems like Portwine gets better with the experience that she is receiving. She isn’t the tallest player but she has lengthy arms and good knowledge of when to do what, during a contest. I would say that Portwine’s best ability is availability. She does a great job of making sure that she is always ready to receive a pass or make a play when things might break down for the others around her. So far this season, Portwine is averaging decent numbers and her York High School team is sitting at 3-3 going into break. If they continue to work and their upperclassmen continue to produce, they are going to have a nice overall season in the grand scheme of things. It’ll get much hard once playoffs come around but in my opinion, they need to take it one step at a time.
