Lakyn Smith
About Lakyn
Expert Analysis
Johnny Vick | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Tough combo guard that gives everything she has when in between the lines on the floor. Strong ball handler that kept the body low allowing her to be a physical player against contact. Great 3-point shooter that has a quick release on the catch. Tough downhill driver that gets to the rim finishing at a high percentage.
As a freshman last season Lakyn earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Due to graduation, she will need to be more aggressive on the offensive end this upcoming season. After watching her at OBU team I think she will do simply fine.

What caught my attention on Lakyn shot was her shooting pocket and mechanics of the shot. She caught the ball in the pocket with shooting hand under the ball. There was no dip in the shot. Caught the ball in shooting pocket pivoting to square up. Nice smooth pull up with the elbow then pop of wrist and fingers down. All this motion led to a very constant shot with the back spin that makes the nets go swish. I have seen this young lady have to work for shots so more than a set shooter.

Due to an injury Lakyn took the load of point guard this weekend. Great job of handling pressure as the Lady Tigers were press in several games this week. Good decisions with the ball as the game I watched the turnovers were very limited. A shooter that you must locate on defense as she is constantly moving without the ball and shoots at a high percentage. Ran some good 2-man action in the pick and roll sets, hitting a knock down jumper or the roller off the screen. A player that finds a way to hit the gaps and draw the foul. 2028 that will be counted on this season due to graduation and injuries.

The first possession on both ends of the floor Lakyn ended up on the floor. First on offense dropped her head and attacked the rim to draw a foul. Second time was for a loose ball under the rim. Both possessions set the tone as the physical style that she plays with. Good ball handler in transition that made the pass up curt to a teammate for the layup. A good spot up 3-point shooter that also has the shooting capabilities to shoot over the screen.
Solid defender that showed the understanding of man concepts with far corner backside help line defense.

Speaking of freshmen with clutch shooting genes, Smith is part of a promising 2028 group at Tuttle. She was a reliable perimeter shooting threat for the Lady Tigers, frequently hitting double figures points thanks to her sweet jumper. But she also showed that she’s more than a spot up threat. In Tuttle’s win against Anadarko, the freshman went coast to coast in the closing seconds for a buzzer beating layup. With a strong freshman season under he belt, she’s now off to a productive spring the the OK Swarm program.

Did a great job at breaking up passes. Saw her hit a three from the top of the key, the corner, and the left wing in her two games, so defenders are going to have to know where she is at all times. Keeps her head on a swivel on defense. Makes tough layups in a crowd despite her size.
