is going to take the Varsity floor over this next six months in attempts to have her best season to date in the sport of Basketball. Hughes is a Simpson college commit and a gamer. She is someone that competes to the fullest every time she takes the court. This position is not a surprising one for Hughes by any means. She has been looked at as their unquestionable leader for years now, so this season is more of one for herself in a sense. She is a great team player and she is unselfish in her actions so it’s nothing to do with that. I think it’s more of just a situation of proving a lot to herself from a personal level. Something that I think will play to her favor in the long run. From a skill-set perspective, she checks off a lot of boxes as an efficient player. She knows how to help the cause without hurting you too much as a coach and that’s all you can really ask for.

Simpson College secured another in state commitment out of CG, MaKenzie Hughes out of Akron – Westfield High School a couple of weeks ago. The Storm have done a thorough job of grabbing several prospects out of their home state and this is a perfect example. If you are from Iowa, can produce at a steady rate on the Varsity floor, and have interest to compete at the next level, then I’m sure the Storm will be in touch. As for Hughes as an individual, she is well rounded as a whole prospect. She definitely thrives in some categories more than others but at the next level, I would assume her production to stay consistent once she finds her way on the the hardwood.

would be considered another player that competes out of the 1A Class but her production would translate to a higher Class level, if she were to be competing somewhere else. Hughes is a Top 100 prospect out of the 2025 Class and she has demonstrated for three years now that she can compete and hold her own against some top-notch level opponents. More times than not, Hughes looks like one of the most well-rounded prospects competing on the court. She has shown that she is definitely talked enough to compete at the next level, as long as she gets a shot. This will be an important Senior season in her recruitment but I think it could fair well for her. If she comes out and plays to her full capabilities, she is sure to impress any recruiters that may be watching.

of Akron Westfield High School is someone that falls victim to competing within a smaller high school program so she isn’t see on a bigger scale too often but trust me, she can compete with some of the best athletes in the state and hold her own at the guard spot. Hughes falls into the category of being both a PG and a SG, mixed with a little bit of a 3 at times. Within a smaller team and program, she has the responsibility to step up and make a play for her squad, no matter the given situation. If you gave Hughes a spot at the next level, she wouldn’t disappoint. She is very well rounded and that will translate to the next level. Especially if she gets to compete in smaller doses to start out as she gets acclimated to the collegiate floor.

- 1/22/24 @ Elk Point-Jefferson – 35 Points (12-21), 4 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 3 Steals, 4 TO’s
Makenzie Hughes started off this past week by putting on a shooting CLINIC from behind the three point line during her teams contest against Elk Point-Jefferson High School. During this game, Hughes scored 35 points while going 9-14 from three point land. Hughes is talented as you can tell. She is a Junior, that is ranked in the Top 100 of her 2026 Class with some room to grow over the next season and a half. The Westerners are sitting with a 9-5 record at the moment and the main reason for that is the play of Hughes. She is currently averaging 22 PPG on the season, while the next highest player is averaging 8. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Every team needs a true leader and that’s what Hughes is to the Westerns. If they want to win, she is going to be the one leading them in more ways than one. As for what the future may hold for Hughes, I’m not too sure. She is a solid talent and she understands the game. In the correct collegiate system, I think she could make some things happen.
