The Unaka High School basketball team will have the benefit of having a bye on Friday, while other teams’ seasons will be on the line with the regional tournament going on then. This comes from having a district title under their belt and having an overall record of 20-4. Shields had a good district tournament. This was highlighted by a big second half in the championship game against North Greene High School. The 2026 grad in helping came back from a 20 point defict dropped 13 of her 15 points in the contest in the second half. Adversity clearly does not affect Shields in the slightest.

Her versatile guard-like game at 5’11” also proved to be deadly in their game before taking on North Greene in the district tourney semis against Hampton High School. In this contest, Shields dropped 28 points.

In 13 recorded games, Shields has 51 threes and is shooting 41% from deep. Her precision from long range has led to many big statistical games. This includes a contest against Hampton High School, in which Shields made seven threes.

Shields’ height at 5’11” at the PG position also has way above-average dribble moves for her height. Pairing this with her lethal jumper makes her one of the toughest players to guard in the class of 1A.

When evaluating this point guard one word comes to mind. Smooth. The change of the dribble is amazing and looks very effortless. The guard hits you with several combos that keep the defense guessing getting by the defender not around. Nice pull up jumper that is in control and could change to second level to get by the defender.

This young lady is about to have a season as she will be looked upon to do multiple things for her ball club. From scoring to facilitating the offense, her hand will be in the mix, especially when it comes to executing the offensive game plan. This young lady is a multi-level threat who will surely be one of the top kids in her district. She, too, will be relied heavily on to carry her squad deep into the tournament. She can handle the rock, shoot lights out, and really be a source of leadership that her teams look at. Solid kid who will have a tremendous year this upcoming season.

After going 6-20 as a program in the 2023-2024 season, Unaka High School improved to a 22-10 record in the 2024-2025 season. 2026 guard Michelle Shields Michelle Shields 5'11" | PG Unaka | 2026 State TN played a big hand in the program’s leap.

Standing at 5’11”, Shields brings a lot to the guard position. The first thing that jumps out about her is her handle. She can create space with an array of moves when dribbling the ball. And stemming from the space she creates, she can score from those empty gaps in numerous ways. She has an elite floater, an above average jump shot, and is extremely good at finishing around the rim. The best part about her game as versatile as it is, is that she does it all under control. It does not matter if a defender plays back on her or crowds her, almost every time she is the one that dictates what happens and how a play goes if she has the ball in her hand.

On the defensive side, Shields is capable of guarding wings as well as guards for having above-average size at the PG position in high school basketball. It will be exciting to see how she builds off an impressive junior season. She is definitely a prospect to keep an eye on.

Michelle Shields Michelle Shields 5'11" | PG Unaka | 2026 State TN dove on the floor going after loose balls gaining the possession for her teammates.  She did well making adjustments with the ball to get the entry pass to her teammate.  Her help defense was effective making it difficult for her opponents to get an open look at the basket.  She did well running plays coming off of screens to get the opening and make her shot.

She shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter, and was deadly from behind the three point line. Shields was also an exciting player to watch in the transition game. One play that comes to mind was a fast break where she faked the pass and finished the layup with a little flare. Shields plays tough defense and has good quickness on the floor. She has a natural feel for the game and stands out in all phases of the game.

Her ability to shoot from long range was apparent in the first minute of one of her games. She can also pull up from the midrange area and score with great efficiency. Shields has nice form and has the range. At Apache, she played aggressively on the defensive end and also went aggressively after rebounds from the guard position. She has great height and blocked her share of shots in game I streamed. Sheilds also has the ability to feed the post for some quality buckets. There wasn’t much the young guard couldn’t do on the court.
