Expert Analysis
Al Schell | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Payton is a long guard/wing with some serious versatility in her game. She has range on her shot out to the three point line and she flashed some good ball handling skills. She’s a connective passer with good court awareness and did some good work on the boards. She is drawing interest from low D1’s and a bunch of D2 and D3 schools.

Payton made the trip down from Rhode Island and she acquitted herself quite well. Defensively she used her length and footwork to thwart ball handlers who were trying to penetrate. She had a couple of nice blocks and closed out strong on the perimeter. On offense I like her ability and willingness to facilitate and set up her teammates. She put up a quick 10 first half points.

Scurry and SGS completed the regular season with a convincing win over Middlesex. The ’27 forward was fantastic in this one scoring 19 pts and going 7-11 from the field. There were 9 reb plus 3 stl to go along with this. Payton is looking even more commanding lately; she truly can’t be slept on. Scurry will be a considerable piece as SGS takes on a battletested LA squad this Saturday.

Payton has a very high ceiling and is a major asset on both sides of the ball. The potential is just oozing out of Scurry. Any given game, she’s likely to fill many boxes on the stat sheet. The budding star is a steal generator and gives driving playmakers a steady outlet with her stimulating jump shot. If defenders give her too much space, she’s likely to make them pay. Her innate ability to affect the game even if she doesn’t put up a bunch of points speaks to just how influential she really is.

Scurry is the #1 combo guard in the class. The functionality she provides within offenses serves her well and her adaptability makes her one of the best prospects in the entire class. She’s a 2-way star whose onslaughts can be absolutely devastating. Her skillset makes her easily insertable into a plethora of lineups depending on the gameplan. Payton will fill the need of whatever her team needs. She’s long and aggressive while being able to make the right reads. She knows when to stop short for the floater or when to use her length to get all the way to the basket. While defending perimeter players, she can engulf primary ballhandlers and scorers. As she matches up with other team’s better players, Scurry is intent on making their day difficult. There’re no easy baskets around her. Even if Payton seems beat, her recovery to get back in the play is remarkable. As she continues to add to her overall offensive game, she may very well be a top 5 contender in short time. She’s rapidly ascending and has all the potential to become a genuine star.

Where to start with such a talent like Scurry? The 6’0 versatile guard is a player that can do a bit of everything on the floor. Payton is following in the footsteps of many of the successful scholarship level players the Bay State Jaguars have. She’s a tenacious driver that has an assortment of finishes before or at the rim. Whether it’s a soft floater or an unorthodox layup off the unconventional foot, Payton is able to use her length to propel herself closer to the rim. She’s decisive enough to stop short if defenders give her the space and knows exactly when to take the ball all the way to the rim when the help isn’t there. As a defender, Payton’s abilities truly put her over the top as a preeminent force at the position. Her long arms and strides allow her to completely shade players off to the sidelines. She’s able to turn her hips while beating ballhandlers to their spot. Scurry also brings statement blocks in transition or in the halfcourt as a help defender. Payton is still a raw talent, but her game is already dominating in its nature. The St. George’s future star can add some firepower as they tool to repeat. Scurry is a real factor on the floor.

Payton is one of the most intriguing combo guards coming in at 6’0. She can play many roles out of the guard position, but can also find success anywhere on the perimeter or mid-post. Scurry uses her size and long strides to her advantage to create driving angles for herself. The quick first step off the bounce is incredible for her size and when she gets through the lane, her length allows her to finish despite the collapsing defense. Her shooting is impressive for a player with so much physical tools. She sports a nice-looking jump shot that has a high arc, a quick release and great rotation. Offensive boards are an area that scurry excels at, no matter where she may be on the floor. She seems to just find the ball after a quick bounce off the rim and puts it right back up. Payton moves well laterally for someone her size on the perimeter and that’s exactly why she is such an intimidating defender as well. Her long arms combined with her quick feet allow for her to pounce on attacking dribblers. Her wingspan alone seems to engulf players trying to find their way into the paint, her reaction time is impeccable and she’s able to recover on the drop of a dime. Scurry is fully engaged on the defensive side, whether that’s playing help side, diving for loose balls or making impact blocks to change the momentum of the game. Payton is one of those players to keep an eye on this season, she is bound for a breakout year on a talented St. George’s squad.
