Reese McLelland
About Reese
Expert Analysis

A legit three/four level scorer. Reese has the skill set to work in the post, and most players at this age do not yet fully know how to be dominant and confident when operating from there. Quick turnaround jumpers, up fakes, and jab steps, Reese has that in her game. With time on her side, she will be able to keep developing and sharpen things even more. The potential is there.

There is room for growth in Reese’s game, but she has the foundation of a strong three-level talent. Defense is where the growth will start, but as she gets older and faster, that will develop. Offensively, that is where she shines, and most of it comes from the midrange and back. She has a strong, fluid form that she rarely hesitates with and has no issue shooting over defenders. If the competition is heavy this summer, and she’s impacted games from a scoring sense, the offers will follow.

McLelland is one of those young prospects who can hold her own with any of the top players in her class, let alone the state, but she still has so much more room to grow. She’s a lengthy wing player with a full guard-like skillset. As far as scoring goes, there aren’t too many spots or angles on the floor that she can score from, defensively she can deal with 1-4, and has the heart and energy to deal with a big.. I think a huge summer is ahead for Reese.

This 5’11 forward is deceiving because when you see her on the floor thoughts of back to the basket forward comes to mind, but once you sit down and watch a full game you will see that those thoughts are off by a mile. Her game is malleable to whatever the game needs from her. She can grab the ball off the glass and push to generate a fastbreak opportunity. In the half court her ball handling and decision making allow for her to initiate offense as dribble handoff operator. The jumper has improved every time I’ve had the chance to see her in person. On the defensive end her mobility is not bad at all. She can play some drop in pick and roll coverages, or she has enough lateral ability to come out and hedge it as well. Mclelland high points rebounds with two hands and is strong with a great frame to take her to the next level.

Not too many prospects these days can match high effort with high skill.. and McLelland is in that conversation. From all levels, she can put the ball in the bucket, but it’s her energy when she doesn’t have the ball that shows the collegiate potential. She has the size, the length, and the frame to deal with contact. Strong potential.

McLelland has a wide range to her skillset, but what stuck out to me the most while watching some of her games this summer is her court awareness. She’s a kid who doesn’t guess where she needs to be, and where she needs to go on the court to create a play or stop a play. She can stretch the floor, finish at the rim, and knows when to cut (great hands) for easy buckets.
