As we move closer to the beginning of the new season CM Coach Jonathon Denney will have to prepare for his season without the services of Tori Standefer. Tori is an outstanding 2021 guard that played a key role for the Lady Eagles as a freshman. Tori is an elite level athlete that started for a good part of the season and excelled in the defensive scheme employed by CM. For the season she averaged 6.4 points and 3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.7 steals per game. She was definitely being counted on to carry a bigger load this year, however, a torn ACL in her last AAU tourney this summer ended those hopes.
The strength of the CM Lady Eagle program that Denney has built is in the depth and the quality of young players coming up through the system each year. So, it is next girl up and lets go. The two girls that will step a little further into the spotlight due to this injury are Harper Buhs and Hannah Sontag. Both girls contributed last year as freshmen and were credited for their effort and energy in the Jerseyville game that led the Lady Eagles to victory. Now they will be in the starting lineup and have more expected of them and will need to take that next step.
Buhs is 5’9 guard that is very versatile. She can step in and run the point if needed but excels because of her motor. Coach Denney is excited about her defensive intensity and ability to get to the basket.Harper played with the St Louis Rockets in the AAU season along with the extensive schedule that CM plays in June Sontag is 5’10 and plays on the wing where she excels as a pure scorer. She can slash to the basket as well as anyone on the team and might be the best 3 point shooter at the same time. Her length really benefits her on the defensive end and in her ability to help rebound. Hannah played with the St. Louis Eagles during the AAU season this year. Both girls have grown physically since last year and Coach Denney feels they are ready to break out and show what they can do to make the program better and help lead this years squad to another conference championship.
We wish Tori the best in her recovery and can’t wait to see her return for her Junior year and we look forward to seeing her classmates, Buhs and Sontag step up in her absence. It should be another exciting season for the CM Lady Eagles.
