The senior will light up the scoreboard from behind the arc this season. We recently caught up with Parker to talk about her game, her recruitment, and next season.
Question:
What is a strength in your game?
Sha’kyia Parker:
I would have to say my biggest strength in my game is my three point shot.
Question:
What are you doing to prepare for the season?
Sha’kyia Parker:
My preseason has been non stop. I’m in the gym everyday training. Even on the weekends there’s no days off. In August I sprained my ankle pretty badly and it kind of set me back, but once I was able to run and play again I haven’t stopped training.
Question:
What are your goals for the coming season?
Sha’kyia Parker:
This coming season I have so many goals set for myself. I plan on averaging above 20, having some 30 point games , making first team all-conference again and first team all- area, even all state. I also I want get more offers. I’m just trying to take it all the way this year and I’m going to play every game like it’s my last.
Question:
You recently received offers from Rochester College and Siena Heights. How does it feel when you receive an offer?
Sha’kyia Parker:
When I receive an offer it’s like when you were younger and you see this toy on tv and you really want that toy. So you ask your parents and they say ok they’re going to get you this toy, so everyday you just wait around anxious to get it. And then your parents finally come home with the toy and it’s just the biggest rush of excitement. This is something that I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid and now that it’s dinally happening it’s really an indescribable feeling.
Question:
Any other recruiting news?
Sha’kyia Parker:
I have two more offers from Olivet College and Lawrence Tech University. I have an overnight visit at Fredonia State University October 27 and I’m currently being recruited by Clayton State University and Jackson.
Question:
What is the best thing about being recruited to play college basketball?
Sha’kyia Parker:
The best thing about being recruited is knowing that I’ll have the opportunity to continue to play the sport that I love after high school.
Question:
What are you looking for in a school and basketball program at the next level?
Sha’kyia Parker:
When I go on visits and research schools, I’m looking to see if they have what I would like to study, if the school is diverse and I’m not talking just race, if they have a high graduate rate, internship and research opportunities, and if I would feel comfortable at the school. For basketball, I’m looking for a unified team that I could fit into well and a coach that’s going to push me to go above and beyond.
Question:
What would you tell kids trying to have the success that you’ve had in basketball?
Sha’kyia Parker:
I would tell the kids to just never give up because there was a time where I was at the lowest and I felt like I lost my love for the game. I didn’t have any offers like the rest of the girls I know and I just wanted to give up, but I didn’t. I just worked up and now everything is falling in place. It’s your dream so chase it. The bumps in the road will only make you stronger.
