Serious Hoops Super Scrimmage Part 1

Serious Hoops Super Scrimmage Part 1

On Saturday we got a chance to watch about 20 teams compete in a round robin type scrimmage fest. It was a nice format with each team playing two quarter rotations in front of about 30 college coaches that were in attendance. It was also a good opportunity to get a first look at some of the area's top programs and their current rosters. The scores reset after each quarter and each team used their bench a little more than they would have in a regular season game, therefore we weren't concerned with who actually won the games. In this part we will discuss a few teams that impressed during the day.
St. John's College High School:
[caption id="attachment_17976" align="alignright" width="300"] Azzi Fudd[/caption] The reigning WCAC champions, who many have ranked #1 in the region and a national top 10 team looked prepared for the upcoming season. Sophomore Azzi Fudd was clearly the best player in the building as she put her full arsenal on display in the game against Riverdale Baptist School. Azzi looked sharp knocking down threes and finishing on the break. She was able to control the floor on both ends and made plays for her teammates. The Cadets 1-2 punch wouldn't be complete, however, without the inside play of Malu Tshitenge-Mutumbo. Malu finished play after play in the paint slipping off screens and cleaning up on the offensive glass. If both continue to play at this level they will be tough to beat this season.
Riverdale Baptist School:
[caption id="attachment_17977" align="alignright" width="300"] Kaylah Ivey[/caption] Riverdale Baptist has been a regional and national top team year after year. Usually they will get in an impact transfer that boosts an already talented roster. This year they've added several one of which being Rayne Tucker (JMU signee). Rayne will be the anchor in the middle this season for the Crusaders after spending the last couple of years at Good Counsel. She was solid on the boards and played excellent interior defense. Yanni Hendley played really well creating spacing and knocking down shots off the dribble. Defensively she was very harassing forcing multiple turnovers and junior Kaylah Ivey was a solid floor general at the point.
St. Mary's Ryken:
[caption id="attachment_17978" align="alignright" width="300"] Kaela Dorthard[/caption] Ryken has been down for several years as the WCAC has been extremely top heavy for a while. It seems that the Knights had built up some talent that may get them in the top half of the conference starting with senior Kaela Dorthard (Hartford signee). Kaela stretches the floor with her shooting and attacks the basket as well. She shot the ball well Saturday and if she keeps it up Ryken has talent surrounding her that can make them really tough this season. They have some good size to compete inside and junior Kathryn White will be a difference maker. At 6'1' White is strong inside but, she creates problems with her ability to shoot the three well.
