Prospect Spotlight: Jaidyn Schomp (2021)

Blessed with terrific size, Derby 2021 Jaidyn Schomp is making a name for herself this season as she helped lead the Panthers to the Kansas 6A state tournament. At 6’2, Schomp is a talented stretch 4 with a high basketball IQ. She is capable of helping spread the floor with her outside shooting, but can also put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket. At the defensive end of the court, she brings intensity and can block shots and grab rebounds. Derby went 23-1 en route to a third-place finish this season as Schomp averaged 5.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 40 percent from behind the 3-point arc. “Playing this season was truly an amazing experience,” she says. “We had great seniors to lead us like Kennedy Brown and Tor'e Alford. I learned so much and really expanded my game offensively. As a team we didn't get the outcome that we wanted, but we came together and truly showed how uncommon we were by over coming the loss and taking third.” Schomp says she is looking to get stronger, more confident at the offensive end and improving her ball handling and all-around game this offseason. She says her parents have had the biggest influence on her basketball career to date. “My mom has always been there to encourage me to keep on playing because the outcome will be worth it,” she says. “My dad was my coach for literally my entire life until high school. He is always there to help me improve and he is always sacrificing his time to go to the gym with me.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span> “Both of them have spent a lot of money for me to have good shoes and ankle braces. I can't thank them enough for everything they have done for me.” A fan of Kansas University and Dedric Lawson, Schomp says she appreciates his inside-out game.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span> “He also has very good footwork and is an outstanding passer,” she said. “Everyday he makes 250 3 pointers in practice, I would like to do this as well to improve my shot.” Schomp has already heard from several NCAA Division I programs, including Colorado State, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa, Texas Tech, Tulsa, South Dakota, UMKC, Colombia, Concordia, Newman, Wichita State, Nebraska, and others. She went on an unofficial visit to Colorado State and was invited to late night in the Phog by Kansas.
