Basketball is very guard oriented, especially at the grassroots level, but colleges are always in search of post players with legitimate height. There are not a ton of true centers in 2022, but I would say each of these three players highlighted below are solid college prospects that have a real shot of playing college basketball.
In the 2022 class, the center position starts with 6’4 Camille Jentzsch of Lake Stevens High School. Cam has a solid frame with great hands and a soft touch around the basket. She catches mostly any passes that are in her vicinity and she can catch the ball on the move as well. Cam can make the 15 footer from the high post or short corner, allowing her to stretch the defense out a bit. On defense, she clogs the lane and is a good presence on the help side. Cam already has a handful of Division 1 schools that are making calls on her, but she is only scratching the surface of her potential. As she grows more comfortable with her potential to be a physical force, Cam will only take her game to another level.
Next up is 6’2 Alexis Stein of Kennewick High School. Alexis is the most physical post player in her class. She is strong, sets hard screens and plays physical post defense. She actually runs the floor very well for her size and trails the break pretty well running full head of steam. When her conditioning is at its peak, Alexis is a tough cover for most posts. She can finish through contact pretty well and as her back to the basket game continues to develop, it will make her even more of a consistent scoring threat. Alexis will be a Division 1 recruit with continued development.
The final center I will mention in this class is 6’3 Elise Hani who plays at Lake Washington High School. Elise is quite a bit more under the radar than her two 2022 classmates mentioned above, but her potential is there as a college prospect. She has great length at 6’3 and has good all around mobility for the center position. She is a real shot blocking presence with her length and jumping ability and she is a solid rebounder, although she will need to get stronger for the collegiate level. Elise was not much of a scoring threat in her freshman year, but I expect her to take a step in the right direction this Winter. She is also a volleyball player and it is not clear what she will end up doing, but she has potential as a college basketball prospect with continued development.
