Every team needs a defensive stopper sooner or later. A player that can shut down a top offensive threat or alter shots in the paint can change a game all by themselves. These players play a role that is often unsung and under the radar. The bigger the games get come tourney time the more important it becomes to have that girl who can get you that big stop. Many of the teams in the PSC rely on pressure defense to create turnovers and easy points. Many of the girls mentioned here are experts in that skill.
- Macy Hoppes is a 5’5 2020 guard from Father McGivney. Macy does an excellent job of reading passing lanes on the backside of their zone. She will let the offense believe they can make the pass and then steal it. She averaged 4.3 steals per game last year. When she is on the ball she uses her quickness to make things difficult for the offense.
- Adrenna Snipes is a 5’7 2022 guard from Alton Marquette. Adrenna is an exceptional defender that was second in the St Louis area with 169 steals. She is great at picking a players pocket one on one. Adrenna also reads the passes when she is off the ball. She does a great job of turning her defense into offense and easy layups.
- Destiny Williams is a 5’5 2020 guard from Metro East Lutheran. Destiny is extremely quick and active with her hands. She does a good job of locking down on the opposing point guards. Destiny averaged 3 steals per game last year. She does an excellent job of getting her hands on passes and tipping an errant dribble. Coach Stock will be counting on Destiny to slow down the top guards on the schedule.
- Aubrey Robinson is a 6ft 2020 forward from Wood River (EAWR). Aubrey uses her long arms to be a defensive force in the middle. She gets tips and causes turnovers by taking up space in the passing lanes. Aubrey stays active and closes down quickly on what seems to be an opening. She is a 3 year letter winner that was the Oilers MVP last year.
- Kristen Stauder is a 5’7 2021 guard from Nokomis. Kristen is a quick guard with long arms that allow her to get her hands on a lot of passes. She plays extremely hard and is a great competitor that wants to have the challenge of guarding the best player. Kristen does a very good job of rebounding from her guard position too. She injured her knee in the regional last year so Coach Engelman is hoping she is ready to go in November.
- Kamryn Fandrey is a 5’6 2022 guard from Alton Marquette. Kamryn is a big part of the pressure defense that Coach Green likes to play. She is quick and very hard nosed. Her ability to cause havoc in a trapping situation leads to easy baskets night after night. There might not be a picture of Kamryn in the dictionary by the word scrappy, but there should be.
- Anna McKee is a 5’8 2021 guard from Father McGivney. Anna does an excellent job at the top of Coach Oller’s press/zone. She has very long arms and great instincts. Anna averaged 3.5 steals per game which is really good considering the year before she had 5.5 and everyone was afraid of her because of it. Anna plays hard and is a very smart player that will read what you are doing and take it away.
The defensive skills at the top of this conference is what sets those teams aside from the others. Alton Marquette, Father McGivney and Wood River all held opponents under 40 points per game last year. If they continue that pace again this year you can look for them towards to top of the standings in the final season of PSC girls basketball.
