This time I was able to observe a workout with many of the Breese Mater Dei players.Mater Dei had another great season last year. After 23 wins the season ended in the Sectional finals with a loss to Effingham. I was able to see many of their returning players work out with Coach Ruckman. Here are some highlights.
- Shannon Lampe is a 5’9 2020 wing. Shannon is very athletic and skilled. She excels on defense where she can get her hands on passes consistently. Shannon handles the ball well and gets downhill quickly when she drives to the basket. Her mid range jump shot is very consistent with good form. Shannon also has the range to hit the 3-point shot when she is left open. As the top scorer and rebounder returning, Shannon will be counted on for a big senior year. Because of her speed and agility Shannon is at her best in an open court where she can sprint down the floor and finish with both hands.
- Klara Schildroth is a 5’7 2021 guard. Klara has a good shot that she can hit consistently. She showed good range by drilling a couple of open 3-point shots. She has good strength which she shows in her defense and passing. Klara was able to make some strong one handed cross court passes in one of Coach Ruckman’s drills. That will certainly come in handy in live games. Klara is very effective in creating space on her finishes around the basket. She was able to twist her body or jump to one side to make room to get her shot against taller players.
- Meredith Innes is a 5’8 2020 wing. Meredith is another long athletic wing that Mater Dei will have at their disposal. She is fast with the ball and can really get to the rim in the open floor. Meredith can finish well with either hand and uses her jumping ability to get those shots off in traffic. Meredith displayed some really nice moves with the ball including a nice hesitation into a crossover that got her in the lane. She will definitely help on the boards this year as she not only can jump, but also snatches the ball at the high point to secure the rebound.
- Lainey Kramer is a 5’2 2020 guard. Lainey is a quick point guard that will be very tough on defense this year. She is very active with her hands and will steal any lazy cross over in front of her. Lainey finishes well in the lane when she has some space to get it over the taller defenders and is adept at using her left hand.
- Emma Gebke is a 5’9 2021 forward. Emma is a very strong player that shows the ability to have success inside and outside the lane. She has nice moves with the dribble for a bigger player but also has great strength to use in the post. Emma will be a tough rebounder and will be able to finish with either hand in the lane. She seems very comfortable with contact and might fit the bill of the next undersized post for Mater Dei.
There were 6 other Mater Dei players at the workout all putting in the effort to get better. Those girls were Ellen Antonacci, Madison Eversgerd, Jacey Wieter, Cora Meyer, Olivia Etheridge and Morgan Oerter. All of these girls show real potential and the ability to play. The Mater Dei program has always been one of the best and I am sure Coach Dave Kohnen will have this group playing at a high level this year.
